Hi,

I have a Ford Focus with stock speakers which sound really tinny and have no bass at all. I was going to buy a sub but have decided to upgrade the speakers first and see if it makes a difference. I Listen to most types of music but also a lot of rap :o, so bass is quite important.

The head unit is a Blaupunkt Casablanca CD51, it was in the car when i bought it so not sure if its better then the stock unit. Is this an OK HU or would it be worth upgrading it at some point?.

These are what I'm thinking of getting, are these any good?. I know naff all about car audio so just picked these as they're Pioneer and reassuringly expensive. Are these the right size for a 2000 Focus zetec 5 door?.

TIA

Mark

For that sort of music [rap] i would probably get those but dont expect low down grunt.

I also listen to rock etc as well.

Would these speakers make a big difference over the stock cardboard ones?.

They will sound a lot tighter due to the cones. They will also have better freq response and be less prone to distortion at higher levels than the stock speakers.Does your Focus have the seperate tweeters in the front?

I'm not sure tbh, its got 2 speakers in the front doors and 2 in the rear doors. Ive not had the door cards off to have a look yet so not sure if they're tweeters in the front. I'll have a look if the weathers better at the weekend.

Well if they are,you would be better off spending a little extra and getting components. Will serve you better in the long run if you decide to upgrade further eg Amp/Sub.

What are components?, are they not components in that link?.

I probably will get an amp and sub at some point.

EDIT:

Something like this then?, are there any you could recommend?.

Actually thinking about it the front speakers make the door card vibrate so i don't think the fronts are a tweeter. I'll have to have a proper look then go from there.

Are you kidding?, the standard Focus speakers can pump out a ton of bass, have a fiddle with your radio bass/treble settings tbh, Mine is so high that the wing mirrors shake when the tunes are blasted :D, AFAIK they are totally standard.

The reason they give out so much bass (which for a start is useless quality anyways) is because it covers up the lack of quality in the higher ranges of the speaker.

I personally recommend Infinity speakers, they sound real good in my opinion.

My Focus speakers are woeful. Yeah, they can go loud and bassy, but the second you get any sort of mixture in there, it distorts like owt. Awful sound when up loud, tinny as anything when compared to real sound system, but certainly better than my old KA's speakers... :p

And that's out of a pretty decent HU!

focus speakers give reasonable performance (i have the 6006CD driving them)

ok so it isnt the linn/audiolab setup i have in the house, but it's pretty decent for all styles of music.

Zip,

That is worth knowing, I have a trade card...

You will be lucky to get 10% off items with a trade card:(

Im not sure what your auto stores are like but the one i worked at was Cost price(Price with 0% mark up) + 10% for the store + another 10% on top of that for GST (Pretty much VAT)

So get to know some Halfords employees and see if they can get them at staff price:)

The mark up in stores like that is Horrendous, it almost makes you feel bad selling things to customers when you know the real price =/

Off the subject but saitrix how did you get 130bhp out of that car and how much does it weigh?

Most 2.0 16v engines are around the 130bhp figure.

I am also a fan of Infinity speakers. Made a huge difference in the Mondeo which has the same crap speakers as Focus.

It comes from factory with 127bhp, it has new cams and ported head. Right now it isn't running that but it is going to be tuned. :) Tis a 2.0 16v engine by the way. It weighs 1000kg, so isn't too slow.

Thanks for the replies. Ive had a mess with the bass settings on my HU and turned it up full and it still isn't great. One tune will sound great then another will sound tinny and nothing at all like it sounds on my Technics Hifi. I suppose it could be my HU thats lacking, Ive never heard of Blaupunkt before so not sure if its a good make or not.

Not really sure what to do now. I could get new speakers and hope they give a bit more bass and sound better than the stock ones. Or get an amp and see if that makes a difference, but i cant see how it would really. I don't want to get an amp + sub + box right now as i also need to get a satnav.

There are 4 speakers in my car, would i need to replace all 4?. Or could i just replace the front ones and then leave the rear ones stock?.

replace the front if you're replacing 2 - the rears should be pretty faded down anyway.

i was listening to MC Solaar and then leftfield in the car on the way home from work today - it wasnt as good as my home hi-fi, but quite frankly my mind isnt as much on SQ when driving the car...
