With the original Athlon and early Athlon XP and Duron chips it wasn't there and/or didn't work. While they wouldn't explode, they would die in a poof of smoke. Later Socket A and all 64 chips are fine.I just said to the missuss when I took the heatsink off my 2000XP it just shut straight down and worked again, I've also done it with a 939 3000 it shut down as well, the thermal cut outs really do work.

There's an amusing Tom's Hardware video where they take the HS off an old Athlon XP, it heats up to 370c or something and billows smoke everywhere.
