Im SO gutted :( a while back I started breaking my friends C Class 2.8, the engine is currently on E-Bay and I wanted to get some 'decent' pics instead of the 'engine in bay' one I have currently.
So, drag the engine out the garage and then think, hey why dont I clean it up a bit, so hoist it a bit higher in the air and out with the gunk :D then, and this is where I went very, very, very wrong - applied liberal amounts of water to clean it down - forgetting the sling I used was adjustable....the water must have got on it somehow and bingo, bango, bongo as I lowered her back down, it went MUCH quicker than I expected.
Cracked the sump, which I didnt realise until the sea of oil started and now im very very very annoyed. Have found out that the cylinder head has been changed though as its like new in there.
Argh - cars, why do I do it

May i be the first to point at you and laugh. :D

because i've never done anything daft engine related, ever.

Oh damn. :( The exact thing I'd hate to happen. Any other damage or is it just the sump? Hopefully not a costly repair for it.

Doh, bit late now but when I used my hoist for the first time a few weeks back I wasn't sure if I trusted the adjustable straps and so tied a quick knot in the left over tails to ensure there was no way they could 'self-adjust' under load.

Bad luck :(

Whats your plan? Pull the auction and fix? then re-list?

Not sure, I think its worth more in bits than as a lump (selling the engine / box / converter as one unit). The sump is complete - would probably get away with alloy welding it

It looks like just the sump, must have come down on the corner and cracked it

You know, thats what I did when I moved it again. Lesson learned - at least this wasnt the chevy lump as I would have been VERY upset!!

That's fine. I came in here squinting thinking an all ally bigblock had got dropped and bent the crank etc etc :D

Trust me, I wouldnt be posting that on here, I would have still been out in the garage throwing things around!! not that I have a temper or anything ;)

Proper German engineering :D Im 99% sure this has had a new head recently, its way too clean and there is NO wear on the lobes at all
