I don't get a chance to frequent every one of the sub forums, but what would be nice is to have a sticky which contains some info on what is the recommended hardware at different price points, a bit like PCW's buyers guide.

PCW's buyers guide basically has different sections like graphics cards, notebooks, motherboards etc etc and then lists a number in different price brackets that are the "recommended" components/systems at that price point.

The problem with PCW is that it gets out of date quite quickly.

So how about an OCUK maintained one?

Based on the consensus of the forum population we could have an OCUK Forums Recommends Buyers guide with OCUK website links to the various recommended products.

Is this a go-er or am I dreamin?

What think ye?

think it's an excellent idea, you're right pcw and likes are not up top date with their hardware recomendations. A adice guide would be a good tool for people who want to buy or upgrade their pc

Ye it is a good idea if ya ask me. Every day you get a lot of people posting new threads " "NEW BUILD PLEASE HELP" etc.

There should be two sections inside imo:
1. Builds for people who plan on overclocking
2. Builds for people who plan to run @ stock

Only problem that i can see is who is going to maintain this and keep it updated, because at the moment almost every week you get changes in price, new items etc..., + they have to be unbiassed regarding brands

It's a good idea but in reality it couldn't work because everyone has different set-ups and usages so bench testing can become quite difficult to compare and costly. For example, if you are testing and comparing motherboards, then the other components must be the same with the same benchmark tools in order to establish an accurate comparison.

That said, the guide can be "opinion" based such as the current OCUK ratings. So a list or database based on the top rated products from this source.

You could do a few:

Light gamer
Moderate gamer
Heavy gamer
Audio production
Video editing
General usage (web, listening to music, movies)

I think it would be like the Microsoft problem they work all year testing their OS on as many different builds as possible to find that within a day of release people slg them off because it doesn't work on their PC there are so many options that it would be difficult.
After all that's why we build our PC's to make them into what we want otherwise we'd buy a Apple Mac everything works great but there's only 1 spec.

I would keep it maintains i spec people quite a few times doesn't really bother me. Just make loads of screen shots with all the differnt buys and upgrade when things change. OBiously prices may dip a bit but peopl could help spot them out for me.

Well, judging by the number of threads in the forum of people asking what spec they need, or asking for someone to check their proposed spec I should say there is a great need for something like that. After all, the OCUK catalogue has a vast number of items and to anyone coming to build a new machine after a few years trying to choose is really hard. It might even save OCUK time if they get many calls or messages asking for ideas or advice.

What i was considering doing a while ago is doing these heading to have multiple screenshots.

Have all of them without including perifials or monitors. They can add them in them selves.

Split them up into:

Enthusiast

HTPC/media

Budget gaming

Budget office

Perhaps i have missed something?

Then put them in bands of 100 quid increasements on the total cost including shipping . Each with comments saying why its good etc and why its worth the extra money. Such as the gap between a 8800/3870 and a 1900xt which seems to be a budget gaming card. Also explaing why certain components have been chosen over others. Which is something i always do when doing a spec for someone. i say why ive chosen each one and where it coudl be improved as notes under the screen shot.

It would only need updating monthly/when something new comes out and i wouldn't mind doing it.

Excellent. Where would you host it, or would it be a sticky in this forum? I guess we would need a DON to approve the idea if it is to be a sticky in this forum.
