Well, I am looking at picking up a second TV as i've decided I want to move my current LG 32LX2R into the Bedroom and hook it up to my PC.

As such I'm looking at upgrading the gap in the lounge to a 42" 1080p. I sit close enough to the TV that at 42" 1080p should make a difference.

I had settled on the LG 42LF66 which at £670-£750 seemed a billy bargain for a 42" 1080p set with HDMI/Digi Tuner etc. Unfortunately after reading into it apparently this set has very weak blacks and sucks with SD pictures.

So now, I need to know a good 42" 1080p LCD (Not plasma) for around £650-£900. Preferably I'd like 2x HDMI inputs, at least one is absolutely required. 1 x Component would also be handy, and preferably a VGA input (or DVI)

Any recommendations (preferably firsthand) greatly appreciated!

Edit: Should have mentioned, Don't need Freeview built in.

Just gotta ask... why not plasma... Although its slightly over your price range, if you shop around you can find Panasonic TH42PZ70's which are 1920x1080 (1080p) plasma panels, which for tv, video/dvd/movie usage will outperform any LCD you care to mention for 'natural' looking picture quality.

On the highstreet they are retailing for around £1200, but online you can get them at a considerable discount. (Looking very quickly £968 including postage/packing/vat)

For TV both Standard and High definition you wont beat a plasma. And these days screenburn is much less of an issue, as the panels have much longer halflifes (60,000 hours average instead of 25000 or so compared to older generation panels). So the days of 'a bit of gaming' ruining a plasma screen are pretty much gone.

Oh yeah the viewing distance, 6ft at 42inch is the maximum distance for 'full resolution' as you move back towards 8ft the apparent resolution will be in the 720p range, and moving up to 12ft even with 20-20 vision you would be hard pressed to see the difference between 1080p and 578p (Standard def)

To get a latest gen 1080p LCD at 40inch+ of top quality I reckon you need to increase your budget by a couple of hundred or so,the samsung LE40F86BDX is reported to be an excellent set with very good blacks and 24p compatibilty, the Toshiba Z series offer 1080p with 24p compatibilty in 37,42 and 47"+ sizes.

The previous gen samsungs are also worth checking out(LE40M87BD can be had for around £800 if you shop around, they also offer a 46" version)earlier revisions seemed to have a few problems but these seemed to have been ironed out with later revs, they offer very good value for such a high spec,no 24p compatibilty as far as I know though.

I have an LE40M86 of the later revision, all of the 24p issues were sorted, it has full compatibility

Couldn't be happier with the TV, you can pick them up for about £800/£900 new now

Think i've settled on the LG 42LY95

Nicely specc'd and cheap at £830 :) I love my current LG so i'm happy to stay with the brand.

Sounds great, let us know how you get on with it,also looking to upgrade from my LG 32LX2R,like you,I think it's a great set but I fancy a bigger screen due to a long viewing distance.

I still reckon the 32LX2R pic quality is amazing for a previous gen panel though, black levels for an LCD screen are excellent and the SD performance is spot on,brilliant for pc usage too.
