Johnathan “Fatal1ty” Wendel

I really don't see the problem either. Footballers get paid silly amounts for running around, kicking a ball and entertaining people; how is that any different to what this Wendel dude does? OK, he's not entertaining people in the conventional sense but he's competing in a "game" which requires a certain amount of skill and talent.

Exactly - people at the top of their fields earn a ridiculous amount of money. It's generally irrespective of what they do.

lol this thread took a turn for the worst,
i am actually kind of curious to know if some of you have met the guy?

You dont know what he is like in person, yet you attack his personality and assume he will never have a gf etc etc etc (although with that much money i seriously doubt thats a problem :P)

No offence, but some of you should read what you typed because it is pretty tragic reading

But hey, entertained me at least

I would do exactly the same if i could, why work for years when you can just slap your brand on things and not have to work again

I do know a bit about Mr Wendel, as I have been involved with the world cyber games. He was for at least 5 years far and away the greatest Quake3 player ever. He won the annual $1,000,000 Q3 tournament on several occasions.

He only began playing CS a few years ago because that's where the money was, and he wanted to prove that he wasn't only good at Q3. He has done well in CS but is nowhere near the top player, but even he will tell you that. He also enjoys his "job". Don't you? I love my job, why shouldn't everyone do something they love for a living? All this rubbish about I wouldn't want to do something I enjoy for a job. Well you got to be stupid to do something you hate, it will wear you down and make you a cynical human being... (looks like it's too late for some people :) )Why shouldn't work be a good experience?

He doesn't spend 8 hours a day practising, he doesn't need to. He doesn't even play games every day, in fact he probably spends more time doing other things and having a "social life" than anyone here who does work for a living.

Why come down on a guy because he is successful?

Ah, because this is a British forum, and we British hate to see anyone being successful, it goes against our fine traditions...

I've watched 2 interviews where his said he "trains" 8 hours a day and also said most of the time he "trains" longer than that even with all his other commitments.

Seriously Fatal1ty aint that good, ive seen plenty of css, bf2 players etc better than him. They just keep a low profile unlike him.

Not starting an arguement here but do you know who he is? Im not a groupie or owt but the guy from what I understand is DUEL PLAYER, so css/bf2 isnt really the same sort of game as Quake/Painkiller and so on. Hes won enough titles in those types of games to be pretty much the best gamer of his time and not just in one game.

The poor guy thinks he's scored in this pic.

However, it wasn't until later that night he realised they were infact ladyboys, don't ask how he found out though! :D

Such are the pitfalls of entering Taiwanese Quake3 tournaments.

I really do find it funny how all his "I need the best hardware" marketing was done, I mean they slapped his face on 7600s.. which weren't th high end cards in that series, fair enough the old fatality motherboards were great but since when did Quake3 or Painkiller need high end hardware?

I'm not being devils advocate for the sake of it but...

I used to enjoy cooking. I wanted for all of my childhood to be a Chef. When i was 16, i started working for a private caterer (didnt bother with college) and spent the next 7 years cooking my way up through Sous Chef, Head Chef and Kitchen Manager. Now, i'm 23, and i work in insurance. I can safely say i never want to cook anything again. I loved cooking, even while i was a chef, but doing it 12 hours a day just to live ruined it. It was no longer fun. It made me angry.

Now i'm in Underwriting, it's boring as sin and i earn a damn sight more than i did.

Never make your hobby your job, at least if you're a perfectionist like me.

Never make your hobby your job
Q.F.T.M.F.T!

Hat's off to Wendel for doing something that many gamers dream of, being paid to play games.
I know someone who has met him in person, he sounded like a nice guy who just happens to play games very well. :D

Dave, I'm dyslexic however what I learnt from it was that all dyslexia means you have to work harder in life on the things your not so good at. I can't spell to save my .... but I try as hard as possible to avoid letting the spell checker do the work for me. As a result I'm not too bad at spelling and grammar. :)
However making use of the spell checker would avoid you misspelling 'that' nearly all the time, it just makes your post that bit more understandable and professional.

No i intend on going to uni studyign somethign i enjoy and earnign at peak around 100k a year doing something i want to do and having a nice life with a good family and a nice wife. I doubt he has a very social life and i wonder if he is married and like i said above any women married to a guy that obsessed with a game is likely to be rather strange also.

Explain to me why i must want to be him and why i must be jellos? Your being rediculas and rather childish tbh and tahts coming from a 16 year old who doesn't want to spend his life playing games and having some adult claimign im just jellos? How lame.

I would only be jellos if i wanted to do his job and i dont. Im not jellos of the money he owns beacuse i hope to rise enough in my carrear to be able to earn a comfortable amount to not hold me back in life. If i was a bum stocking shelves then its more likely id be jelos.

LOL how can you say that? So you expect to be earning 100K a year, thats like a 5 year old saying he wants to be a space astronaut.

And also why have you got such a good gaming rig? its not as if you dont intend do do a lot of gaming.

I saw some videos interviewing him not long ago. He doesn't spend 8 hours, he spends 10-12 hours  Maybe not every day but it's a wonder how he doesn't have serious eye strain and RSI problems.

How can he spend that much a day? He must go to the gym I mean he aint fat, been on the PC every single hour of the day means you are gonna get pretty fat.

Not if you eat healthily, he could be surviving on bananas and water for all we know, he probably has a commode under his seat as well. :p

Who knows?. He might have been the victim at school and stayed in a lot. Started playing a game he enjoyed. Got great at it and then people started to take interest. He then got popular which breeds confidence and now karma is sorting him out:confused:????.

I think "My Name Is Earl" is starting to get to me  :D.

I don't think he'd need to train 8-12 hours a day though. Maybe a few hours a day as he'll have to fight the up and coming. The younger the better in this game (FPS online) as if you pick up great online skill at an early age you will start to certainly mature into a very good gamer. So he will always have to be at the top of his game and remain interested to be able to push further with his skill. Winning all the time can become boring and you want new challenges but the money, the publicity, cards getting named etc, etc it would become harder to be disinterested.

Fair play to the guy. I know my first line with "He might be a victim" and all that was just for laughs but maybe it could be true and if it is then I want this guy to do extremely well and wish him all the best.

You've got to admit it's pretty sweet to kick everyone upside down in a death match game though?. Pure ownage :p.
