Coming back from town on my bike having got the wifes birthday card and present.

There is no lowered pavement outside our house and a lot of parked cars so I normally do the last 50 yards on the pavement. Now I don't ride on the pavement unless it is a cycle path or cannot be avoided and when I am on the pedestrians area I stop to give way or slow down to an almost standstill, OK?

So I am about 20 yards from my house when and I sport a couple of dodgy looking types with two pushchairs sporting cans of "lager". So I pull onto the side of the pavement to let them past. At this point the man says "Road" and I say "I am just pulling up to get to my house"

I did after all stop to let them get past.

He then grunts "Road" again. Nonplussed I say "Yes I know it's a road" and then get to my front door to put the bike away. I happen to have my panniers loaded with a lot of stuff so want to get them away and I don't like the guys tone. He then seems to get very cross all of a sudden and starts saying

"What's his %^&^&* problem he should use the road" and "Right that's it.."

WTF? So he starts making threatening moves towards me. Now I know a bit about when somebody is or is not going to be violent and his body languages screamed that he was ready for a fight. I was not in the best postion what with my bike in the way to respond easily to a punch up. Had it off come to blows it would not have been pretty. Diplomacy time, me thinks!

I raise my hands in a non threatening gesture and say "Look I just needed to get my bike in" and "Look I didn't mean to offend and how about you just go about your business?"

He didn't take this well :( Thankfully his "girlfriend" could see where this was going and told him it wasn't worth it. This seemed to calm him down (a bit) and he went off muttering "******* go about my business, should smash his four eyes in ( ) and I know where you live"

So now I have a system full of adrenaline and I have to wonder if the idiot will come back after drinking more Special Brew and kick the windows in or something.

What a complete and utter pleb. Almost tempting to round this kind of unthinking, incapable idiots up and put them in an estate and then put a big electricified wall round it. Drinking Special Brew, dosing around doing no work getting benefits that I pay for by working.

Great.

Should have smacked him - hard, but he'd probably have a knife or something and it wasn't worth getting dead for...

/rant over.

You did the right thing trying to calm him down and lucky his girlfriend had some sense.

Trust me it was close. I knew he was going to get violent and I was in no real position to defend myself due to my location and the bikes location.

He was just the type to get upset over nothing and turn violent. Grrr

Cyclists generally wind me up and even more so if they're on the pavement so no sympathy my end!!

I generally don't ride on the pavement but can't very well squeeze a heavily loaded bike between parked cars, can I? Did you miss the bit where I said I stop and give way in those rare times I am on the pavement?

They have as much right to use the road etc just as you do. TBH i respect them more for helping cut back on emissions. So i suggest not posting if you have nothing useful to say.

Sounds like you handled it the same way any other decent person would have, good for you. You just never know with these types!
I know it's a bit extreme but wasn't some poor chap stabbed to death on a bus for asking fom guy to stop throwing chips at his girlfriend?....was on the news recently:eek:

First off, congratulations for not using any swear words in that! Secondly, he will live a sad and meaningless life and will probably die quite young.

If he had hit you I'm sure he would have felt a pratt a few hours later and even more of a pratt when the police caught up with him and added Assault to his record.

Have a nice cuppa tea and calm down now mate, forget about that fool.

Usual waste of blood and organs, been in a few situations where they're all talk, its only when they start having a go for no reason that I get worried.

you read his post? it cant be helped unless he wants to meet Mr 4x4 in a dangerous situation.

you should be alrite the fact he actually walked off when his girlfriend said shows he wasnt really up for it as i tend to find they ignore the girlfriend no matter and just argue with her later.

Yer i saw that on the news recently, and the guy laughed after doing it ! Although it leaves you to think, why was this type of person released from prison in the first place.

It might still be worth reporting it to the police in case he did come back (unlikely) or you bump into them again and get more bother.

Last time something like this happened to me I called their bluff and they backed down, however in the light of current stabbings etc. I would think twice about it now.
