its quite obvious we need some defensive cover though, surely they can just sit down with him now, sign mascherano, sort out whos out + who he'd like it to replace them. Its not like he wants to spend LOADS.

without knowing the internal workings of most premier clubs i do get the feeling that most of the top ones usually have their transfer strategy worked out some way before 2 weeks before the window opens.

IF that is the real transcript then there is something up - no one just says the same thing over and over like that, Rafa can speak pretty (eloquantly)well when he wants to/ able to

Media hype or someone really brassed off.......I think the latter

hes just doing what he did after our 2nd ch league final in 3yrs, straight after the match he called for backing of the board and money to be spent, which tbf he got cash and spent approx net £25m . (on good players who all have scored a few each)

Using the conference to get media attention means G&H have to act. It was a clever move by involving the media showing a disgruntled attitude coupled with a tongue in cheek comment regarding the England job.

Rafa is used to this and was always showing his frustration in la Liga , can you remember his comment at Valencia ? he wittingly accused his boss of bringing him a 'lampshade when he’d asked for a table'. hoho

they did act. 2 hours later, telling him they'd already made a significant investment and that they weren't going to talk about any transfers with him until mid december. oh and that he should get on and focus on coaching and training the team.

It's clear the owners are waiting to see what happens in the cl before committing any more money to Rafa. He has spent a lot of money and the results haven’t been great, which is frustrating for everyone because the squad is good enough to do better. A good start to the season was imperative for the moral of the club, and that's not happened. He really needs to get a grip of the situation a start producing consistent winning results. Moaning like this isn't going to help him, the squad or the club.

Tom Hicks has responded to Rafa's press conference by telling him to stop talking about new players, and concentrate on the ones he has at his disposal.

Benitez clearly isnt happy with Hicks and Gillett, and it seems Hicks is not happy with Benitez either. “After the Champions League final in Athens, Rafa made certain demands of us and we responded to those demands in the summer.” Said Hicks.

“We brought in some good players and spent more money than has ever been spent before at this club. We now have some crucial games coming up in the Premier League and the Champions League and we want to see if we can win these games with the players we have.”

“This was the message we gave to Rafa recently and I think during the international break he must have grown a bit frustrated about this. We told him to concentrate on the games coming up and nothing else and I guess he didn’t like that.”

“But, for the time being, we just need to be focused on what happens on the pitch. George and I will be over in mid-December and that is the time to talk about other issues. It is really time for Rafa to quit talking about new players and to coach the players we have.”

i'm just copy pasting this so i don't have a source yet.

EXCLUSIVE by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL co-owner Tom Hicks today ordered Rafa Benitez to “quit talking about new players and coach the players we have”.

In an angry rebuke to the Reds boss who launched a cryptic attack on the club owners yesterday, Hicks made it clear the club will not even consider any demands from Benitez until mid-December at the earliest.

At yesterday’s weekly Melwood press conference, Benitez admitted he was frustrated with life at Anfield and continually told reporters that he wished only to concentrate on coaching and training his team.

His repeated comments have been taken as a thinly veiled attack on Hicks and George Gillett – who recently told Benitez to forget about transfers for the time being and to focus only on the players he already has at his disposal.

In an exclusive interview with the ECHO today, Dallas-based Hicks responded to Benitez’s comments by defending the level of financial support he has afforded the manager and insisting the time has come for the Spaniard to do his talking on the pitch.

He said: “After the Champions League final in Athens, Rafa made certain demands of us and we responded to those demands in the summer.

“We brought in some good players and spent more money than has ever been spent before at this club.

“We now have some crucial games coming up in the Premier League and the Champions League and we want to see if we can win these games with the players we have.

“This was the message we gave to Rafa recently and I think during the international break he must have grown a bit frustrated about this.

“We told him to concentrate on the games coming up and nothing else and I guess he didn’t like that.

“But, for the time being, we just need to be focused on what happens on the pitch.

“George and I will be over in mid-December and that is the time to talk about other issues. It is really time for Rafa to quit talking about new players and to coach the players we have.”

Sources close to the Americans admit they are concerned with the present climate but hope to see harmony in relations restored quickly.

sorry i'm aware that it's the same thing over again, i originally got the copy/paste from redcafe but a quick search on RAWK shows the article is from the Liverpool Echo.

but what i dont get is why they are being like this when its quite clear mascherano is one of the stronger members of the squad. Why delay things??
They were also willing to pay for Heinze if the chance arisen, but it was blocked, so cant he atleast be told hes going to get that for use in january??

without knowing too much if anything i think that this is a pretty hard time for all businesses operating with debt and on credit facilities. costs are rising and of course there are other assets to manage, your stadium for instance has increased in price pretty dramatically due to rising price of steel. i think getting new players in while increasing your levels of debt might not be super high on the priority list at the moment. doubtless it's still an option for you but i guess they want to be sure about your revenue streams before comitting to anything.

Guess so, maybe just waiting to see if we progress in CL, the revenue from progressing from that is enough for a player or 2 :)

Benitez stop moaning and start owning!

You had enough cash to spend at the start of the season and brought in some good players. If you actually started league games with your strongest squad and stopped rotating so much and rested our top players in petty cup games I am sure we would be in a much better position now. Time to look at yourself Benitez and your system before throwing your toys out of the pram.

To be fair if he fininishes more than 10 points off the leaders this year I would fancy a change in manager and I am sure our yank owners would too.

Who would you have to replace Benitez?

hasn't been discussed yet so maybe most of you think it's a non issue but still:

From what i understand Rafa was aware of the statement that the Yanks were going to release prior to the press-conference hence his stock answer being about "coaching and training his team". If that is the case then im not sure why they ever planned to release any statement because up untill then there was no hint of any problems. Another thing about the press-conference, Rafa quite often has 1 stock responce for questions regarding transfers etc so its not anything new.

As for what the problem is? Supposidly Rafa wants a definant answer on the Mascherano deal so that they can tie it up asap and how much he's got in January but the yanks won't give an answer utill they come over in December (possibly linked with the CL progression).

This barely counts as news to me, Rafa wants some funds and the owners said they want to discuss it with him in December. Hardly matters when they discuss it because they're not going to sign anyone till January anyway.
