VW Main dealer servicing

Those fixed cost servicing schemes may sound alright pricewise, but two people I have been talking to (one with Audi and one with VW) mention that they completely leave out things that are supposed to be changed, e.g. certain filters and the like. These two are quite knowledgeable and put little marks or cut minute parts out of things that were supposed to be changed...they get the car back with a service note that just says "service" and makes no mention of what specific work was done.

Granted, one of them also had the tyre package and spoke very highly of it (most people would if it was a 3.0 Quattro right enough :p )

So, on the invoice there is no statement of what service parts such as oil, filters screws  etc used including their price?

If not I would ask questions....

On my last service at a VW main dealer all items were stipulated.... whether they were changed or not is another question

Basically, provided the garage in question is within 5 miles of your local VW main dealer, VW will match their prices on servicing and repairs, as long as the price includes the use of genuine VW parts.

Useful in Greater London,a fat lot of use in Cumbria & the like!

All this genuine parts stuff makes me laugh with the main dealers. At the end of the day 99% of the time the same companies make the "genuine" parts as make the aftermarket stuff.
Good example of this is a while ago a part was needed for a Volvo at a garage we used for our MOT's (this at the time we had a garage as well). They bought the part from Volvo (I presume as the customer had requested genuine parts or something). It was a Bosch part and arrived in a Bosch box, inside a Volvo box! They called Bosch for the price and from Bosch the price was I think not much more than half Volvo's price! :D

No, not 99% of the time. Nearly all aftermarket parts are crap compared to OE parts. Yes, you can find the manufacturer of the OE part and get it elsewhere - this is what I do. I.e. genuine clutch for GTI-6 is a valeo partnumber 2342356345 - Ask motorfactors which make they supply, cross check part number - jobs a good un. Best bargain was the clutch cable. Genuine OE was made by Dura at a cost from pug of £45. Got a dura one, same part number from motorfactor in veco bag for 15 quid :)

Well maybe not 99% but it is one hell of a lot of the time. Valeo is a good example actually, as a lot of parts are indeed Valeo on French motors. The dealers certainly want plenty for the same part. I don't agree on the aftermarket parts though. I've found they do the job just as well as the original part. As you say about the cable, a lot of the time it's the same part just with a different stamp! Another example is the camshaft sensor in a Vauxhall Ecotec lump. The sensor from the factors was an identical part (same part number) to the GM one, just the GM logo seemed to have been removed. And it was about half the price of the GM one!

Because VWs mainly use long life oils. The Dealerships were losing money as the customers would never visit. Any problems out of warrenty etc would be done at independants and such like.

I can only assume this is to get some custom back, even if they are not making as much as usual

the indy's that do use the proper long life oils (us included) are also noticing VAG owners going elsewhere on service costs, getting told to pee-off and called rip-off merchants isnt much fun, but the thought of the pillocks 1.8t wearing out its rings due to cheapy oil cheers me up again :)

on many of the engines now there is a HUGE mark up on the oil prices, our local VAG trade group offered us the 505.1 oil for something like 4.96 a litre with a RRP of £15.65.

VW dealerships offering to undercut their rivals? Impressive stuff...

I'd have been even more impressed if they hadn't charged my old man for about 10 years to "service" the Passat he bought new from them. Ten years during which, despite only needing to flip two clips to replace the distributor cover and rotor arm, they simply couldn't be bothered. Repeatedly, year after year after year...

A tribute indeed to the quality of Bosch parts.

Out of curiosity I used to mark up the bits as the years went by and the car always came back with the same worn out old bits. In fact, for the several hundred pounds a time service, twice a year, the only thing the main dealer appeared to be doing was servicing the customers' wallets. With the exception of plugs, filter (hopefully new and not just wiped, and an airfilter)(Oh yeahh - and a plastic bag on the seat to give y'all that feelin' of confidence!!!) nuthin' much actually appeared to get serviced at all.

Finally the old man buys a new one and gives me the Passat - nice low mileage with only 150,000. Despite the hefty and relentless 'servicings' by 'main dealer' and various other scamsters it, for want of a better description, drove like a piece of sh*****tttt.... Shuddering, juddering, pulling, sluggish, fuel gulping, wandering, lousy brakes, cutting out, noises, creaks, that was broke, this didn't work etcetera etcetera etcetera.....

The car, however, is superbly engineered like most german stuff. The real problem's lack of quality control by VW of it's UK dealerships, and the poor knowledge and expertise of most fast-fit 'we'll MOT it for yaa.." outfits etc..

It must have taken me a couple of hundred hours hard work to overhaul all the calipers, overhaul the suspension including Audi TT solid control arm bushes, overhaul the starter, sort wheel bearings, replace one hub carrier, fit new discs, fix the cutting out problem, sort the glitchy gear selector, replace engine mounts, correctly fit the exhaust (with A2 stainless nuts/bolts)(available from any good marine chandlers, y'all..!!), swop the steering wheel, diagnose a duff Hall Effect sensor, replace split vacuum sensing pipes, service all the electrical plugs and earth connections, change all drive belts, fit new Macpherson Struts, tie rod ends, bellows, balljoints etc etc....

Anyhow, the car's all sorted. Mega reliable, slick, fast, superb handling and economical..

But it's gotta beg the question.. If I've managed to do all the above for less than £300 what the hell exactly are most people paying for when they get stung by the motor industry for 'servicing'.....!!!

Well, there's one answer idea ;) Even at minimum wage that wouldve been £1100 in labour, nevermind at proper labour rates (most indies charge around £40 an hour plus vat.......lets not even start quoting the figures for THAT one!)

All you do is ring a backstreet place, get them to quote with VW parts and jobs a good'n.

Is this correct? Is it as easy as that?

If so, my mate with a garage will do me a pretty competitive quote I reckon and he's within 5 miles of my local VW garage too. Cheap servicing for me :)
