Evening all,

I've been wanting a new car for a while now and everything I want is too expensive or un-insureable ( < Thats wrong isn't it { The Spelling } )

I've seen a Peugeot 306 HDi with a remap to 115 bhp for sale and it looks rather nice >> Here

all the HDi's also seem to come with the nice " Cyclone " Alloys which I like.

Please can some people with the knowledge help me out on the bad / good points please :)

From what I've read before people say the Interior styling is rather dated, and the 2.0 HDi engine is a bit lacking in power. Anything else to put me off ?

I'm thinking of spending between £2000 - £3000

Thanks in advance.

EDIT - I've added the link to the ebay listing,

do you really NEED diesel ?

i've done 480 miles in a 2.0 hdi 90 this week, laggy as hell

I've only ever driven a 1.2 Petrol Corsa ( The New one )

I love the torque you get from a diesel engine, my current car is a Diesel ( Peugeot 205 1.8 TD non hdi obviously )

With the petrols you have to rev the thing to go anywhere sharpish :p and the insurance is rather silly.

The remap should bring the engine to life though surely ??

the leon tdi 110 is a lot more expensive to insure then a focus 1.8 tdci 115, and the focus is nearly the same price a 206 hdi, i once got a quote with my insurance company. the tdi 90 is cheaper and it wont be slow once its remapped.

Taken, there is a 110 bhp version of that engine. I think the only 306s they only fitted it to was the estate but you could get it in a Citroen Xsara hatch. The Xsara is the same car as the 306 under the skin and often cheaper.

I have had a 306 hdi d turbo and it was a great car and it felt very quick and give you a a feel of fun when driving, which is important to me.

Was cheap to run too! you will love it.

I have now moved onto a corsa vxr which is a different kettle of fish! :)

How do you know?

The only version I like is the FR ? which has the nice facelift bodykit, the insurer I use is the same as mum and dads ( Dairy Farm Policy ) they are very picky about cars, Plus I won't get a Seat Leon TDi FR for £2000 - £3000 :)

I will be calling the insurers first thing monday for a quote, Dads almost 100% sure that it won't cost anymore than my current TPF&T.

Thanks :) , I will have a look at the Xsara hatches, I love the shape of the 306 I'm looking at though, so going to the Xsara might be a step too far.

Bahh.. the cars on ebay >> Here

I didn't want to post it because other people might bid, but thats just being silly.

Its gone up to £1300 already

Sorry Gadge, I completely missed this post. I swear it wasn't there earlier when I did that quoting

Its a nice looking car IMO, its not going to be a rocket ship I know, But it will feel 100 x Better than my old Peugeot 205 in both the looks and powerplant :)

i was in the same boat as you... second car coming up in second year of driving... needed diesel for the mileage i did... only had a budget of £2-3k...

looked for 306 hdis, all high mileage and overpriced...

then looked at xsara hdis.... found a younger (therefore, in the lower tax bracket) perfect low mileage high spec one for tupence...

problem solved. the later xsara hdis like mine also come with fmic and therefore are 110bhp, decent enough as a second car. and can be remapped to 140ish with ease. phase 2.5 xsaras look better than 306s aswell... the xsara is the same car under the skin but often a lot better priced and a lot better specced, all in all, a great car :D

:)

All 306 HDI's are 90bhp regardless of hatch or estate as they didn't come with an intercooler.

Also for the person who said it was laggy there must be something wrong with yours as the turbo is pretty much lagless on the HDI!

Zsara is Fugly.

Im a big fan of the 306's ive owned quite a few and i must admit they really are a great car to drive, handling and ride is excellent, engines are rock solid, reliability on the whole is fine, electrics can be a bit iffy tho.

My mate has recently had his HDI remapped (128bhp he reckons) and it still is real fun carto drive, and this is coming from a bloke who drives a 250bhp Focus ST, so far the lad hasnt seen a drop in MPG either, but now theres more power through out the 5k rev band, and theres no peaks and troughs.Interior isnt all bad, seats are excellent, dash isnt bad either. The driver enjoyment certainly trumps interior in my book anyway.

128bhp remap on a standard DW10 90ps lump is either 1. BS or 2. a crap, very smokey map... ;)

and yes, all 306s came with the 90ps version, which is a shame really. also not all HDIs come with cyclones, thats only the top spec HDIs such as the dturbos and the meridians etc. in standard form, the 306 does edge it in looks. however the phase 2.5 xsara with the seperate fogs etc does look very smart, esp. on VTS suspension (like mine :p).

depends how much you got to blow really. for £2-3k you'd struggle to find a half decent 306 hdi for that, however this is the stupidly overpriced south west... you'd easily find a nice xsara for that.

:)

couple of my mates have one, cant say either is smoky, even on startup... the sp tuning agressive map takes them to about 115ish and thats about the max before you start getting issues (with smoke etc)... 128 will no doubt be awful on a standard lump.
