Vista or XP

I love Vista. I have a dualboot and game on XP. Although, looking at DX9/DX10 comparisons, I'd really liketo run games like Crysis under Vista, but the performance impact is just too big at the moment. Hopefully this will be addressed when SP1 is released.

tell that to my benchmarks ;)

even superpi 1M is 2 seconds slower.

I'm dissing on Vista, I really like it.. it's just not exactly a benching OS - it's like someone applied a go-slow to everything. And this is on a 3.3 c2d, 2 gigs, x1950pro. Not the best machine in the world, but Vista makes it cry in comparison to XP.

Something wrong somewhere then, personally my 4GB,7800GT,3800 X2 cpu run my Vista x64 just as fast a XP in both gaming and general use.

I prefer Vista by a mile(my XP PC is only used for updates now, sooner they phase out XP the better).

It may just be that nvidia drivers are performing better than ATI drivers in Vista..

I much prefer Vista, it feels more professional, and has lots of features I like (such as right clicking a share to map as a network drive), but as I regularly attend Lans, and don't have the beefiest grfx card, I want all the performance I can get :)

XP no contest. (after Ubuntu)

1. I dont need Vista, why the hell should I be brainwashed into buying the latest OS when the ones I have work perfectly well, they're stable and cause me no problems.

2. I have no intention of upgrading my machine just to run an OS

3. It's a new target/challenge for every wanabe script kiddie/ l33t h4x0r

4. The tilt bit will be a target (see number 3) Who in their right minds codes this into an OS, idiots!

5. DRM (see number 4)

6. Restrictive licensing

7. Problems with drivers (specifically high end audio & video packages having their sample rates crippled for lack of signed drivers)

8. I like to know exactly what my OS is doing and with whom it's talking and sending my private data to.

9. The hardware in your computer can be remotely disabled by Microsoft at any time

Probably loads more reasons I can't be bothered to type out tbh. And before anyone asks no, I am not a rabid M$ hater and yes I have used Vista although not on any of my own machines. I'm sure Vista is great for the masses but not for me sorry.

Microsoft were just following the HD DRM specification as defined by the MPAA and RIAA and their partners such as Intel.

5. DRM (see number 4)
See above.

6. Restrictive licensing
Vista's is no more or less restrictive than XP.

7. Problems with drivers (specifically high end audio & video packages having their sample rates crippled for lack of signed drivers)
Then install the Vista compatible ones? Why try instaling drivers that clearly weren't designed for Vista

8. I like to know exactly what my OS is doing and with whom it's talking and sending my private data to.
 Then type Netstat or download one of the many connection viewers such as TCPview from Sysinternals. Or hell if you're really paranoid use Wireshark.

9. The hardware in your computer can be remotely disabled by Microsoft at any time
I assume here you are referring to the part in the HD DRM specification where a signing certificate can be revoked remotely? Well that's not specific to Vista, any OS that can play legal HD content has the same feature. And it's not really "disabling" that hardware. It simply black lists that driver and either requests that you install the latest one and/or automatically installs it for your from Windows Update. But this hasn't happened yet. It would require a serious flaw to be found in a driver and/or a graphic card GPU for this to happen and even then it would need to be very exceptional circumstances.

Your hardware?. What like, your hard drive, cpu, gpu etc?.

How on earth do they do that?.

*NINJA EDIT* Just read NathanE's reply above, that explains things a bit more clearly.

Valid point but it still makes Vista very tempting to the kiddies, who could resist? I note you don't comment on the legitimacy of having the tilt bit in the OS though?

I'll give you that one :) . But I feel that way about the XP licence as well.

Again valid, but because they haven't necessarily been written yet why the hell should the idiotic DRM cut the sample rates etc, crippling the application???

I am paranoid, my private data is just that... private

Ok but why would I want to use an OS that can, stop working because my brand of hardware got hacked by someone in another continent?

Anyway thanks for the time you took to type that Nathan, please don't get me wrong Vista does have some very good points, unfortunately for me they are not enough to tempt me.

I see you didn't argue with 1,2 and 3 though :D

What a load of rubbish. Where did you find that info from? Outer Mongolia!?

Anyway, Vista runs like a dream on my PC and has done since day one!! PC is fast and responsive.

Peter Gutmann.

Next?

(NathanE actually explains it much better than I did)

what are you on about, lame people will hack xp through known faults. It's only experienced people who will try to break down vista. Firewall and virus scanner and your good. I don't see your point.

Thats because 1,2 & 3 are rubbish

you don't need to upgrade anything to run vista,
3 as above

1 is a fair point, but for many people who are buying new and thus have to buy a new os it might as well be vista. Where other's want it for dx10, or other new features.
