Ok so i was driving home in the dark and cold, doing about 60 in 5th gear in the fast lane (due to lots of traffic) on the way home. Suddenly I had a loss of power... so I put my foot down and nothing happened.

Suddenly my revs and speed needles both start rapidly decreasing...at this point I drop it down a gear in case that had anything to do with it - no response either. The dash then lights up and says "STOP!" - which was obviously going to happen whether I wanted to or not!

I stuck my hazards on and tapped my brake repeatedly to let the drivers behind and in the other lanes know that I was about to come to a halt on a motorway. I saw a gap and swerved across the lanes into a sliproad to a little chef where I was stuck. Took the handbrake off and pushed the car in the as far as I could and got stuck on a curb (lol).

After about an hour, my dad arrived and we thought about towing it. I plucked up the courage to start it and it started up first time, so drove home like a granny. :(

So what would have caused this?

Coincidently, the car is getting a full cam belt and timing belt change tomorrow AM

Dad had this happen in his Sterling once, for no obvious reason.

Never did it again!

Not of much help, am I :p

Similar symptoms once caused by duff fuel pump/relay/wiring :)

How much is the cam belt change on the Lambo?

not sure and will hopefully never have to pay whatever that would be to change a Cam belt!

The Golf is getting the cam belt change :) (with timing belt as part of the kit) I have a friend who works for VW as a mechanic who ordered all the stuff with staff discount and doing it for me (saves couple hundred quid!)

Anyways, ideas to why my Golf would just cut out? Feel free to use this in future for VW reliability Fox :D

Low on fuel? Dragged up some crap from the tank? Could be any number of things really.

is it a diesel ?

all kinds of things could make a car cut out, your best getting it diagnosed for £40 odd quid or do your self using vag-com

Had full tank of Fuel, plenty of oil, just had a service, fluids all high, car was warmed up.

Its petrol and never had this type of problem before..

cam belt AND timing belt, wow that one must cost a tidy sum ;)

As said in the post up there somewhere^^ got a mate doing it for about £140ish :) But VW quoted £560

cam/crank sensor springs to my mind

yes, a fault with one of these will cause the engine to cut out and check light come on immediatly. Could just as well be a problem with the ignition system or fuel pump. Diagnostic machine will tell you without any guesswork.

best thing for you to do is get it on a scanner, but maybe get a 2nd opinion form somewhere else too (if its gonna be expensive), phone vw technical ect.
