Right, i have £5,000 to spend on a new(ish) car. 2nd hand probably.

It needs to be a five door as we have a baby.
Air-Con a must have
Low tax (Cheapest around)
Economical

I know you guys can help me. Not fussed on what model of car really but any advice would be great. Thanks

some sort of VAG diesel? tax about 115 a year, million miles a gallon, and quite newish and reliable... be it leon, a4/a3 or skoda...

Why does it have to be low tax? The differnce between £110 tax on a small 1.2l car and £190 tax on my Xedos 6 2.0l V6 isn't a huge amount, just over £7 per month over the year. If you have a baby, that means prams, push chairs, changing gear et al. So don't get a small car , get a medium sized car one year older. I am sure a Focus 1.6 would have the space for all the baby gear, would be reliable and reasonable running costs.

As Rob stated, I wouldn't just look at the tax.

Economical motoring is a combination of good fuel economy, cheaper tax, insurance and running costs. I'm sure that's probably what the OP was getting anyway. :).

I have a Fiesta Diesel which is a pretty decent car, the Toyota Yaris is also a decent car. You may want something a little bigger like a Focus with a family etc.

The new Fiesta costs £35 p/a to tax, is group 4 insurance and I get 58MPG on a two hour per day motorway run. I'm sure at lesser speeds higher MPG would be seen. Servicing is every 12.5k, although I'm not sure how that compares to most cars?

Fords servicing isn't cheap though, with a full service costing £220. Fortunately I know a very good local garage that do a cheaper service.

There are other newer cars such as the Yaris that are as cheap to run.

I'd try another Ford garage if I were you, £220 is a lot for a service on a Fiesta.

You want something like a Focus 1.6. Plenty of space for you and your baby, safe, reliable, cheap to fix in the rare event something goes wrong and whilst it isnt £35 to tax, an extra 70 quid a year is nothing when you are spending £5k on the car.

The Yaris is a very good car. My mother has had three now since they first came out. Has had to replace one front bulb and a window wiper between the three. Not bad for seven odd years of motoring.

I think a focus would be a nicer size for a new family member arriving :)

edit : oops, thought yas were expecting child. anyway... go larger than yaris :P

focus 1.6 excellent family car for the reasons fox said, its also great to drive

if you dont like focus's then maybe a fiesta 1.4 tdci ?

Been advised by a good mechanic to go for a Toyota Yaris. Much better than the Ford's! I have driven a Focus but i don't think i would get a £5,000 one that has low milage and not too old!!

Where is the best place on the net to get 2nd hand prices?
