The Benifits of Decent Cooling on a 8800GT (Accelero S1)

Yes - looks a bit difficult to source those SLI ribbons though. Have you clicked on the shop link from Actic Cooler's site?? Takes you to an RMA section of the 'Bay! lol
Hhhm and there are none available to buy anyway.
Ive put a thread into product suggestion section of OcUK forum.

i got one chucked in with my motherboard. Try the MM, people might have them going spare for this reason.

Sounds a bit scrappy, are the turbo modules no good?

No :)

I'd be tempted to put one 120mm card at the end of both cards and have a wind tunnel effect.

Ought to work quite well and better than passive if you can't fit a fan on each.

Exactly what im planning, but hopefully providing a draft over the NB heatsink above my single card as opposed to a second card below.

Morning chaps, first post on this forum.

I have a BFG OC 512mb 8800 GT and after running COD4 it got rather noisy and extremely hot (around 90c). I switched off and let cool down and fired up again and run Crysis, only got to the opening video when a clunk noise came from the case. I shut down the game and checked temps and it was reading 119c. It has turned out that the fan is not working now but the card itself seems to run fine apart from having no cooling. I am not running it now.

Should this be sent back or do I keep it and go for the S1, ram sinks and fan and would I be fine doing this as the stock fan will be removed anyway?

Cheers in advance.

Sounds pooped. I'd get it RMA'd. Once you take off the stock cooler you'll void the warranty anyway so get it replaced now so you know nothing else is wrong with it.

That was what I was thinking, does it go back to OCuk or BFG directly?

Returning Faulty Goods - Please be sure returned goods are faulty and the problem experienced is not caused by another component in your system or by software configuration. If after having received Technical Support information you are completely satisfied you have faulty goods please request an RMA number (Return Merchandise Authorisation) by calling 0871 222 8528 (calls cost 10p per minute) or using our WebNote system at https://www.overclockers.co.uk/webnote.php.

I do find it worrying that I have to go down the path of invalidating the warranty just to keep cool a card that has not been overclocked in anyway by myself. Is there not a solution to cool the card sufficiently without doing this?

Buy a dual slot GTX? Or the new rev GTS when it comes out (assuming that will be dual slot?) :P

I've had a good go with mine mate - both cards have exhaust fan under them and an 80mm fan pointing straight at them - maybe made a 5'C difference.

I'm putting it down to my case which is why I'm taking the plunge and buying a decent one, designed for cooling.

If that doesn't work enough, then I'll just risk it and buy the S1s and hope the cards never fail. Unless you can actually put it all back together so that the manufacturer doesn't notice it had ever been removed.

Not sure I can afford a GTX.

How safe is it to fit this S1 mod with ram sinks?

It seems fairly straight forward but will it cause problems in the long run?

I am new to all this, I have built many systems before but never a gaming rig and the invalidating of the warrenty scares me a bit. Is there a card with similar performance and price but with no cooling issues?

No, not compared to the GT mate, thats why they're out of stock everywhere.
Look at it this way, what would you rather do - add a mod like the S1 and see your temps drop by 20'C or by 40'C with the turbo module, or run your card at 90'C-95'C while you game?

Thats the way I look at it - so long as you're careful with how you mod it and don't go in all heavy handed breaking things, you'll be fine.

It's gotta be better running the cards under load at 50/60'C than 90/95'C, more likely to fry without the mod. Bear in mind it's winter now and your room is probably a lot cooler than it will be in July and August! (hopefully).

Hope that reassures you a bit bud.

Yeah I think you're right. I did a lot of research before I got his card and knew it was the best choice just didn't think I'd be pushing the reported temps myself (blind faith if you like).

I am good with this kind of stuff, and aren't heavy handed so shouldn't be a problem, just have to bite the bullet and do it I guess.

First thing to do is RMA this one for a new card and start again.

Thanks for your advice.

Just taken the card out to have a look.

Shone an LED torch inside through the fan hole and there seems to be a round, black sticker with overclocked written on it impeding the fans movement. It looks certain that this is the problem.

Where has this sticker come from?

And can I fix it easily?

Hmmmm, just managed to get some tweezers in to pull the offending sticker out, it has come loose from somewhere, maybe do to excessive heat. I am gonna shut this system down and fire my new one up again and see if this has fixed.

I will get back to you.

Ok I have been reading up on the Accelero S1 on a variety of websites and of course here and am convinced enough to get it for my 8800. I was looking at the Thermaltake Duorb but I just think this is better, so tommorow morning I will be ordering:

* Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 VGA Cooler
* Akasa AK-TT12-80 Thermal Adhesive Tape

I also want to get a 120 mm fan or even two of them to keep it super cool. I am not bothered about sound so which fans should I go for?

The Arctic Cooling Accelero S1/S2 Turbo Module? No zip ties or velcro needed! ;)

Or something else?

I dont have any fans lying around so I will need to buy some, please help me out! I am currently at 750/1800/1000 on stock and I know I crank it some more!!!
