80" 720p Vs 1080p Screen - Gaming Discussion For Upcoming Review!!!

I have a question regarding projectors having just measured my wall space I could probably google this but I'm lazy :)

If you have it mounted on the ceiling and have all your consoles and things hooked up to it does that mean you have to have all the wires running up to it or do you connect all them up via something else?

It's easiest to have everything connected to an av receiver of some kind. I have 6 devices connected to an Onkyo 605 - which outputs everything via a single hdmi cable to the projector, or component to the tv. It also makes for a very decent amp and takes any audio equipment you may want (I just have an Ipod attached) and supports 7.1, lossless audio etc.

Warbie have you any screen shots youd like to share?

Also can anyone confirm if Drakes Fortune on PS3 is 1080p?

Does any 1080p HDTV owners notice any difference on their displays if they run 720 or 1080

*Perhaps PS3 will start seeing more 1080 res games come next year as coding improves?

I leave my PS3/TV to "decide" which res to run the games.

IE, most games, my TV switched to 720p, and the odd few, 1080p. I never try to fiddle with it, so that 720p games run at 1080i.

The Drake's Fortune demo certainly runs at 720p, not 1080p.

With regard to games that are 1080p, I don't know about which ones "cheat", but certainly as RP2000 says, the PSN games are 1080p.
When I initially got my PS3, with a few games, Ridge Racer 7 was the only one that ran in 1080p, it it was obviously a lot sharper, and made me go "wow" when I first saw it.

The Darkness also ran at 1080p, which is why I assumed the framerate was less than perfect, though I still found it perfectly enjoyable and playable.

The Virtua Tennis 3 was 1080p.

The original GT:HD, single lap thing was 1080p, and again, just looked sharper than other games.

The new prologue demo, even if it uses cheats, looks nice and sharp with the TV running at 1080p, though there are noticable jaggies, maybe a side effect of the "cheat" so if I can see that on a 40" display, of course, they'll be more noticable on a HD projector.

Ninja Gaiden also runs at 1080p.

I think that's it for the non-PSN purchased games I personally own, that run in 1080p on my TV, RR7, Gaiden, and The Darkness.

IMO however, I'd rather games looked a good as, and ran as well as DiRT and R&C, for example, at 720p, than to loose graphical detail and framerate, so it could run at 1080p. 1080p games do look lovely and crisp, and can give that added "WOW" factor, but no at the expense of performance.

Wasn't The Darkness 720p on the XBOX, and looked/performed better?
What about Skate? I remember the demo on the PS3 was 1080p, but had dodgy blurry textures, whereas I'd imagine at 720p, they could have used the power lost in the extra res, to up the texture quality.

only 2000? should have got two. :p

I have a 1024 x 768 projector, id be interested to see a real HD one, it looks great on the one I have set at 720p. I think I need a new bulb, I just cant be bothered getting one while the other still works. What happens to the bulbs do they just get dimmer or will they burn out like a normal light bulb ?

They just get dimmer.Well mine has anyway. There is still a few hundred hours left in it yet though.

Interesting you say that.

I was watching a film on mine last night, and I could've sworn that it wasn't as bright as it used to be. Got about 1,750 hours out of 3,000 used so far.

I assumed they would stay bright, and go pop at some stage as well.
Hmmm, I have a spare new bulb here, I could fit that, and see if it really does make a difference, but I was hoping to keep that as new, to assist with selling it, to put towards getting an HD projector ;)

I've seen 1080p material on a 1080p DLP projector- damn impressive. Excellent blacks too. The shop was going to get a £10,000 1080P projector but went for lesser model, I think around £5-6K

To be honest it is embarrasing the amount 1080p games. Lets not forgot that the PS3 was so powerfull that it would have been able to originally handle dual 1080p screens. Oh well seemed like a good idea at the time to tell us all that.

Theirs no doubt that for super high res or jaggy free games the best option with a big fat 1080p screen may be the PC. On consoles it seems to be 720p with 4xAA is the best solution which dont get me wrong can look great. Many only do 2xAA but i still dont think weve seen the best of the X360 yet and we certainly havnt with the PS3.

I think Sony would also be best to use 720p with 4xAA if possible than 1080 with none. However its a numbers game and is unlikely to change.

I know the experiment is going to offer nothing really different than what 1080 projectors and HDTV owners have already said. However it should make people more aware of the current situation and HYPE surrounding console 1080p gaming.

Expect an honest and commited post regarding my own findings soon. Besides with photos it should be more entertaining and if possible highlight any visible differences

Can we have a list of games that should perhaps be considered for testing?

It arrived yesterday...
Big, improvement over my AX100 720p projector, very smooth and cinematic with 1080/24 Blu Ray, really is an awesome product.

Game testing to be done over the weekend but as mentioned in this thread the differences beetween 720p and 1080p because of the lack of 1080 native games wont show much improvement regarding jaggies etc. The difference between the abilities of each piece of hardware is a big jump though.

Will have an upcoming thread covering my thoughts but may just combine the movies with games for the Home Cinema section.....

After the PS2 bull**** parade no one believed a word of the PS3 hype, and rightly so it appears.

Am interested in your findings Latte. I'm in the process of buying a new TV. It'll be 40" and was looking at the Samsung 1080P, but I am now wondering whether it is actually better to get tv with 720 vertical lines rather than 1080 for gaming on my 360?

Spent 2 hours comparing GT5 Prolouge demo between the AX100 and AE2000 projectors.

Jaggies as expected really do not benifit if shown in native (we know GT5 isnt proper 1080)
Testing was:

1x 720p projector being fed a 1080p signal from the PS3
1x 1080p projector being fed a 1080p signal from the PS3

Games really wont make any benifit if your upgrading to a 1080p screen unless youve got proper 1080 native games. The higher resolution of a 1080 display recieving a 720p game will not even with upscaling increase the visibility of jaggies.

With movies its different you get 1080 TV and movies no problems which show a great benifit but im afraid for consoles having a 1080p screen isnt really going to improve the look of the game based on resolution. Of course its important to still understand different displays have better levels of performance regarding picture quality and thats were on most displays regarding games will the picture quality be noticed.

Ive really been blown away with the difference in abilities of my two projectors with the new 1080p model producing much better colour, sharpness and blacks that really are closer to a plasma. The colour depth and level of sheer colour brillance is vastly better.

Will try and add a few pics to demonstrate this but (Home PC is down/posting via PS3)

Just upgraded my HS10 (720) to a Sharp 20000 (1080).

The main thing I notice is deeperblacks, better colour and improved contrast.

Still needs adjusting though. Needed a new mount as well as it was a tad bigger ;)

GT5 Prolouge Demo 1080p output via AX 100 720p projector

Notice the blending of the paint work, its kinda pinkish in light areas
Also pay attention to the quality of the black level on the bumper

Now the same shot.

Both projectors were running on "normal mode"
AE2000E 1080p

Notice how the pinkish tones are gone completely and the light areas on the car blend in much better.
The black level of the bumper is also much deeper being a nice jet black than greyish black.

Jaggies seem uneffected...
