"Long Way Down" : McGregor and Boorman at 9:00pm BBC2

Fingers crossed. Although Eva(if that's her name) is going to join them in the near future if the first episode was anything to go by. Should be an interesting dynamic.

So why don't you?

I'm going to Romania via a ton of other places in September with my parents and my girlfriend on two bikes. I only passed my test in April. Do it :)

Don't go on an old one though, old bikes are crap, and not in the quite pleasant way that old cars are crap. They're just properly, properly crap.

The usual reasons - time and money, and the lack of them. It's a pipe dream because although we'd like to do it, the reality is we wouldn't be able to do it without some major upheaval to our lives at the moment. I admire the fact that you're doing it though, sounds like it will be fantastic.

As for bikes, yeah, it would have to be a big modern tourer. But we just both like the looks of vintage bikes like the R75 and old Enfields, thought it might be comical to get one and just hoon around on it like Steve McQueen, perhaps adding a sidecar for extra room :D

You can get to Romania in 3 days - you can see a good chunk of Europe in two weeks!

My parents went to Morocco and they were gone less than 20 days!

I don't have the time, money, or experience to go swanning off for three months, but almost everything in Europe is reachable, not just by motorways, within a two week holiday easily.

£600 and a week booked off work will see you both with bike licenses. You know it makes sense :)

Please stop tempting me! :p

Work isn't the issue....both at university at the moment, me in my final year, so I especially cant miss too much. Perhaps when were done with uni and before we have proper jobs. Next summer we are thinking of at least a road trip to Europe with friends though :)

What on earth makes you say that? Old bikes are far far more reliable than old cars, mostly because theres so little to go wrong.

Take a look here for what can be done - this guy did a 20k mile tour on a bike that cost a total of about £250 and carried is luggage in welded on ammo boxes! Some of the pictures halfway down that page are awesome - true adventure biking :

Or theres a guy on advrider.com thats just seen his old BMW click onto 400K miles with just a couple of head haskets and gearbox bearings replaced.

Seriously, old bikes can be an awful lot of fun, and will still outperform most new cars!

hah, you can still buy them brand new for £3495 in Army livery

Seen a few of them on 06 and 07 plates recently at Squires.

Loving the look of the new Triumph Scrambler though - modern technology but classic styling:

ah cool recorded this and gonna watch it later, loved the phone ins they did each friday to Moyles on the way :D

I managed to get a good view of it when they were coming off that tiny ferry about 30 minutes through. They missed quite a few shots where it wasn't blurred.

Seems a bit of an odd thing to happen though.

A marked improvement in tonight's show, if you ask me. Now they're slowed the pace a bit it looks to be getting much better, more like the old one. Still too much time spent with the 4x4s though, they need to ditch them!

That i am afraid is a silly comment, old bikes are brilliant, but you of course have to except the few issues that go with them.

My ES2 which is a 500cc single will cruise at 50-60mph and return around 80mpg, if you wanted something a bit faster the 500/650 twins (Triumph/BSA) will cruise at motorway speed easily and still return 60mpg or more. You can rebuild an engine at the side of the road if needed (i have done before). All these little bits just go to show how much more suited they can be to long distance travel.

It's only opinion - I've never really found any appeal in actually owning an old bike... I love to listen to them and look at them, but the concept of actually owning one's never appealed at all.

I'm a bit odd like that... I like new bikes, and old cars :D

Thread revival time :p

I'm enjoying the show so far, But not as much as " Long Way Round "

It feels different somehow.

Tonights episode was good when they went to see the Gorillas, but that church with all the dead peoples bones and skulls was shocking :(

It feels a lot less like an adventure and more like a road trip.

In Long Way Round they spent a lot of time riding through nothingness, no roads just fields, as well as the whole road of bones section which was immense.

This feels a bit easier somehow, and is less exciting because of it.

Still fun though.

Agreed, don't know what it is but I found the first series a lot more engrossing.
Me too, im not actually watching this one any more. Really enjoyed way round, but way down.. its probably because way round was so tough and this isnt a step up from that. Still an impressive journey, but definitely not as intriguing.
