My pc recently started crashing a lot and just turning off, then it didn't turn on at all, so i took it to bits, cleaned them, and it only seems to work outside of the case (on a cardboard box), i have an e6300, 7800gt, using 1gb of geil ram atm but have 2, 150gb raptor, antec sonata 2 case, ocz 520w psu, the computer is on atm but only because it is out of the case, i repasted the cpu and attached the heatsink again (tuniq tower), and its booted up with the e6300 @ 1.6ghz ( underclocked) and the core temp is ~38C which seems high to me. Any help :( ?

EDIT : im using risers etc so i dont think it is shorting out

it sounds like a short when the mother board is in the case. Recheck your mother board mounts

Your temps will be slightly high as you have reapplied new TIM and it hasn't cured yet.

What were your temps before the problem started

also when its in the case, ALL the fans spin (psu, cpu, case fans, gfx) and lights come on, just not on the screen

That would indicate a graphic card problem. Do you have a spare G/C to test? to rule this out?

out of interest which motherboard do you have?

hmm a bit stumped really. There must be a short somewhere, may be there is a cable playing up?

Do you have a spare PSU by any chance?

ok, an update, i had the pc working with the motherboard out of the case, i put it back in the case and the psu starts and all the fans do, but it doesnt post, took it out and it worked again, so i put a peice of cardboard in the case above the risers and it works, but how can it short out if the risers are the same as they were for 8 months and have been fine for 8 months :\

But tis good news to hear you are back up and running.

It appears the cardboard has resolved the issue as you state.

As to the cause?

Dude i am as confused as you regarding this issue:confused:
