How is a fog light technically different from the headlights? Is it a higher wattage bulb or the positioning, or something else?

It throws light low across the road, so as not to be reflected back like the main beams are, enabling you to see further down the road than is otherwise possible in thick fog.

Yup all about the positioning light just literally just lights up the fog and dosent let you see where your going, not having any in really-cant-see-past-your-bonnet type fog = death, or sit with hazards on till it passes.

I was there nearly 3 hours.

WTB: 106 fog lights. :p

And they are low down which helps light the road up but cuts down on reflection from the fog. My headlights are really high and it's impossible to see anything in fog unless there's a car approaching. Yellow lights seem to work a bit better in my experience too.

They are to be left on when there is plainly no fog at all to annoy the hell out of all the other drivers. They really is no point in them.

Not meaning to start the 3478937584th OCUK war on this, but i fail to understand how foglights are any more annoying/irritating than normal dipped beam headlights.

Its their positioning dude, they look as bright as beam headlights, hence: Annoying.

Why do Scoobys/Evo's or other cars with those additional spotlights have them on when its not foggy? Are these even foglights?

some cars have driving lights...

Driving lights work with your hi-beams for greater visibility at longer distances. They project a long, narrow beam of light in a variety of patterns which greatly extend your range of view. Fog lights work together with your low-beams to improve your visibility in foul weather, such as fog, rain, snow and mist. They emit a low, wide pattern of light that's designed to shine below the haze. This reduces the amount of blinding glare that occurs when you turn on your hi-beams in foggy weather.

Yes they're foglights on scoobys/evos.

Most but not all. The WRX's have foglights but there's an option to have them replaced with driving lights instead by the main dealer, obviously they swap the loom a bit so they come on and off with the high beam if the driving lights are fitted.

Some of the special editions, P1, WR1, RB320 etc come with driving lights as standard rather than foglights.

Not sure about Evo's, but I assume it's the same deal.

Btw my pet hate is foglights on when it isn't foggy, they aren't focussed like normal beams so they dazzle the hell out of me at night if there isn't any fog to attenuate the power. They are however, a useful indicator of drivers who are more likely to do something stupid. :)

Anyone else spotted those blue or green spot led lights people seem to have stuck on their dashboard/bonnet recently? They look as pointless as lexus clusters.

If you're referring to washer jet LED's then welcome to 1999.
