Fixing a Really Old CRT TV

I have a really old (20 years maybe) Salora Scancolor CRT television, quite big, 26" screen maybe, has a nice wooden case, very broken.

Anyway, I know nothing about repairing TVs, but it started switching itself off, the picture would just disappear, kind of into the middle of the screen. Now it won't switch on at all. I think the "tube" has gone, but I'm totally guessing. Anyone got any comments on whether this could be repaired?

Any good forums where old TV enthusiasts hang out??

Thanks

people are giving away CRT tv's now LCD's are around....

take a look at freecycle or similar, I saw a 28" widescreen a few miles from me... if not ebay, then throw away the old TV.

CRT TV's have really high voltages (10KV+), I wouldn't take them apart unless you know what you are doing.

Thanks for your reply. That's what I was thinking.

Cheers

No problem...

If it was a nice big LCD screen that was out of warranty, I'd be tempted to test the backlight and inverter, but if it was a CRT, I'd rather chuck it than spend time fixing it...

Maybe you could remove the electronics, seal it up, and make a fish tank out of it or something? I've seen this done with an old computer monitor, and it looked quite cool... Or if you just want another telly, just drop the broken TV off at the tip on the way to the TV shop. :)

off at the tip

When dumping stuff, ALWAYS smash it up- the workers there sell it on ebay! Whenever I have to throw something half broken (but still worth something I really smash it to pieces) ie a vacuum cleaner that looks used but with a burnt out motor is still worth something.

Cheeky gits!

Smashing up TV's is fun, but they do implode (partial vacuum inside), so be careful.

I go for the lobbing a brick from distance approach. :D

Why do you care if they make a bit on the side?

Just seems spiteful if someone can get some more use out of something

I'm with daz - if you've decided that it's not worth your time selling it then at least let someone else have it if they want. No point sending the lot to landfill if someone can make use of it.
