I really can’t stand this word ‘chav’ anymore, it seems to be used to describe someone who lacks social skills, who dress’s in a certain way, someone who has no place to go in the evening so hangs around the streets, maybe not as well of as you and me, maybe they are looking for a status, have a lot of anger and direct it towards other who have more…….and yeah maybe they like to drink cheap drinks.

Anyway I used to use the word all the time, and then I started working on a well known local council estate helping with a youth group, on day one I would have called every one of those kids a ‘chav’ however six months on I detest the word and really care for these teenagers.

A lot of these kids have it really rough from a young age, they can be poor in every sense of the word, not just money, it can be social skills, manors or hygiene……deprived of basics, you can’t help what family you’re born into can you? Or what parents you get? Getting to know these kids and breaking down the barriers shows some of the nicest kids I have come across, a real mini community going on, some people just need a little time invested in them and a little self worth that’s all.

I hope the word will die out or stick with the select few that can be called it….

I agree in some respects, I have a few mates who in their younger years could be called chavs, but they have grown up so it is possible.

It is the 20 + year olds that act like this that is worrying and chavs bread chavs. My mates parents aren't exactly what you would call chavs, they just hung around with the wrong crowd.

Back in the 70's and 80's everyone was a '*****' or 'gyppo', small minded people will always find some term to denigrate those worse off than themselves.

Yea but not all 'Kids' Go out looking for a fight, breaking cars, house windows, robbing old ladies do they.

no they don't and that is not right, but you are more likey to do that if you have nothing and have been brought up with a dad in jail and a mum on crack

Yep, and thats why guys like you are doing a great job with them, but far more of them that wont get help and will continue to be degenerates and the name will always stay with them :/

Yeah that is a good point, and i don't really know what can be done on the grand scale,

The word gets tedious, however, I still have a complete lack of respect and massive dislike for "those people"...
Of course there are some nice people, from what I have experienced (in Aberdeen) a lot of them are just utter ****s though.
I'd say anyone 16 or over is an adult, and there's plenty in that age group that need to wise up.

I guess different areas can have different sorts of people, as time goes by it just appears to get worse.

Chav, also Charv/Charver and Chavette (pronounced /ʧæv/, with 'ch' as in chair) are mainly derogatory slang terms in the United Kingdom for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions derived from American hip hop such as imitation gold, poorly made jewellery and fake designer clothing, combined with elements of working class British street fashion. The term appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005.[1][2]

I know, but they know they are labelled and act like the name they have been given, my experience (which is minimal) is when you break through the hard shell, these so called degenerates or chavs are just like everyone else. They act and behave the way they are expected to, it's social compliance in weird way

Students = normally from middle class and upward scales, dress like hippys and buy from charity shops, making themselves lesser?

So called Chavs = dress in designer labels and where bling (fake or not) to make themselves better

We all try to fit in I guess

yup but the point is, even if you come from a broken home at some point in your life you have to take responsibility for your own actions. By the time you are 16 it should have happened.

I understand and agree on what you say, but if you are deprived of an education and not just school I mean ‘life’ from bad parenting it’s going to take you a bit longer than most before you can get to the place where you stand up and take charge of your own life. 16 is way to young in my view, some of these less deprived kids will be a few years behind the normal run of the mill middle class 16 year old.

I dont know how the word popped up. They've always been called Charva's or Charvers and Radji's around here.

True,
They need to work, that will give them something to do and get money to do stuff instead of hanging around, then were onto the next problem.
Its really hard to get a job for young people now, there are so many places to work but im sorry to all to start this up again the jobs are taken by foreigners lol, my brother is really intelligent and needed a part time job along side doing college, he tried sooo many places and he got A's etc from school and nobody took him on, 3 of the places he tried he was the only british guy there and he said half of them didnt speak full english and sure enough 2 weeks later those shops had a new fleet of foreign staff, Fix the foreigner problem first then our own problems will be sorted as there will be more work for the british guy.
