Aliens and the like.

Why is it gret games like half life and crysis have been messed up by aliens. The first half/part of the game is great, jungle tactics, realistic etc then its wrecked.

Is it just me that feels like game developers get so far then just cant be bothered?

Im sure many other games have been wrecked by unrealistic environments and models

CRYSIS SPOILER BELOW--

Why is there only two or three types of aliens in the game. Along with a couple of big spiders and a lame transformers look-a-like robot that comes out the sea.

Its a load of crap, id much rather see new models of koreans, animals that attacked you and traps than this rubbish.

I have to agree, i think the alien route is being used too much, first Half Life then Far Cry then Crysis, its getting boring! Half Life 2 was ok but the latter two were spoiled by the addition of the Aliens.

?????

So thats, 3 games, one of which doesnt have aliens in it.
One of which was always advertised as having aliens in it.
The other one is based on aliens..............from the start.

I know Half Life has Aliens and like i said, it was ok, but Far Cry and Crysis were spoiled by starting with normal soldiers and jungle warfare, then they suddenly have you fighting monsters or aliens.... just changes the game and spoils it for me!

They do it to add harder enemies. I always get irritated at games that include "elite soldiers" where men in body armor can take 5 shots to the head and not die. Aliens can be bigger and stronger than men without breaking suspension of disbelief. Nobody really wants every enemy in a game to be equally easy to kill, from the first redshirts you see always through the final showdown.

You have a good point with half life as the game was based around them and experiments gone wrong etc. It was still good whilst they were in the labs but once you were on your way to zen world it really killed it (for me)

Opposing force was good though. I just feel the same as Tweak that it wrecks the game going from jungle and realistic to aliens and monsters

Return to castle wolfenstein was another

In that case cant the make the AI better or adapt the landscapes to make it harder. Like have snipers in tree houses, mounted turrets, trip lines...

Vietcong was a good example of a nice hard game that got harder and non monster-ified. Im gonna have to re-install it onight I think and play it or hardest.

Damn that was a hard but good game

+1

Also, I think the Half Life aliens/zombies are great, valve have mastered them.

I agree the monsters in Farcry were awfull, in Crysis they are new, but need some work on them. Imo they were still fun to fight in Crysis.

Overall I agree with the OP to some extent, humans are generally more fun to fight than aliens, Half Life being one exception.

half life has had aliens in from the start! it's one of the best games in computing history imo. millions of players cant be wrong!

you'll be moaning about having cars in racing games next :p

I don't think the mere presence of aliens is the issue, it is the travelling to the desolate and bore-inspiring alien homeworlds.

I loved killing zombies and headcrabs around the black mesa facility but killing grunts and big spiders on xen was a chore. Same with crysis, altho the aliens were even less fun to kill that half lifes.

Increasing hit damage *should* be something of the past to make enemies harder to beat. Why not give them more advantages like sending out scouts, burning down foliage or be better camouflaged?

edit - Even if the burning effect doenst look that great, it would be better than a flying blue octopus!

You're right, of course, but that is why they do it, IMO. It might be a BS cop-out for lazy level designers but it does work for many games. Half Life is a story about aliens, plain and simple. Vietcong is not about aliens so it would be silly to include them. Everybody remember that ridiculous PS3 game where feudal Japan was teeming with giant crabs?

this is what spoiled far cry for me :(

loved it until you start seing aliens, either be a bit realistic, or be serious sam!

half life isn't wrecked by this, this is what makes half life

its not the settings that ruin it, its the gameplay and content with too many games hyped up beyond reason leaving some feeling totally letdown by the released end product.

If developers were able to just concentrate on the game without deadlines and exec interference, games wouldn't have half the problems they currently do, but unfortunately with the way of the industry thats not going to happen anytime soon !

For me it's not the lack of realism, it is the complete change of direction that annoys me.
I can be happily enjoying the story of goin gthrough the jungle/city/desert, searching for the enemy general, when you suddenly find out the general is not the problem, but actually a 12 foot green alien is. WTF!!!

How many Hollywood films ever do that (other than comedies)? AFAIK none, because if they did viewers would leave theatres not knowing what the hell was happening.

If movies don't do it, why do game develpers think it is a good idea.

so you're whinging about a handful of games?

have you played graw, rainbow six, moh, call of duty, etc etc..

there's tons of FPS games that do not have aliens in, you managed to name three.
