A friend's new tattoo

So his mental image is a cartoon character in DragonBall Z land? And people reckon this guy and all the other 'modders' don't have mental problems?

Who cares what his mental image is? He was born with it. There's nothing he can do about what he wants to look like.

But what he CAN do is whatever makes him happy. Which he does. And he's presumably more 'successful' than you - and no doubt richer. I bet he gets more fanny too.

Why's he such a loser?

He's happy.
He's fairly wealthy.
He has a child he loves.
He has a cool car.
He has tons of friends.
He has a career.

Well done. But once again you, and all the other 'modders', neglect the fact we are talking about real jobs, not a studenty part time stacking shelves/serving at a till job that anyone can get.

what is it you do for a living? You obviously didn't read my post. I definitely have a proper job - real interview and everything. how weird is that?

The problem the crazed, anti-body-mod people appear to be having is that they don't have a rational reason for disliking them, and they're inferring incredibly stupid things from the fact that people like to get pierced or tattooed. wonder if they realise how stupid they seem. probably not

i work in the nhs
i am patient facing
i have a job with is both mentally and physically challenging, whilst at the same time i have to be thoughtful, empathetic and be a good 'carer' to my patients
i have never had anyone make an issue of my appearance

in the current climate, when over 50% of graduates failed to gain employment, i attended 4 interviews and was offered 3 jobs

so, what real job would you suggest i would be better suited to, as a 'modder'?

so the point that you're trying to make, and just so that we're all clear and you don't need to continue to post this, is that myself, blackstar, penski, sic and goldilocks have mental problems yes?

despite that fact that you know (virtually)nothing about any of us you're willing to make this judgement on our collective mental health . and still you're continuing a conversation with people who're mentally ill?

I agree entirely, however I find it extremely strange you think it's something we are born with.

It develops as you go along, obviously, but what I'm saying is it's a part of you that's always going to be there, you can't just hack out the desire to look like such and such.

You can either go with it, or ignore it, but if it's strong, ignoring it will only make you miserable.

Let us move away from the ins and outs of body modding and back to Penski's embarrassing hero worship of his good 'friend' Shannon, the most successful businessman ever.

(Hopefully there's a few more pages worth of posts in that idea...the thread is dead at the moment!)

Does he work over the phone or not? How big the company is is irrelevant, my point was he doesn't meet customers face to face, and if he did it would most likely be held against him.

A few years back I contracted as a project manager for BT Major Business. For the uninitiated, the MB clientele is BT's top 500 customers (including financial institutions). I had purple-tinged hair, big holes in my ears (although not as big as I have now), a big hole through the middle of my nose, a big hole through my lip and tattoos which are visible with a short-sleeved shirt on.

The role involved desk-based and face-to-face work directly with customers from shop floor to boardroom.

My modifications were never a point of contention and were often used as a positive identifier "Is the guy with the piercings in? We need something done..."

My point is that no matter what you may have pretentions to believing, professionalism, ability and communication skills shine over your preconceptions.

A clothing shop isn't a stereotypical environment of a retail environment though..it's one of the few high street type shops where you get some bloody weird looking people. The kind of person I see in Cyberdog in Camden fit in perfectly for that shop because of the mods, but if you're looking for a standard retail environment, you are probably better talking about Dixons, or Waterstones etc etc where I'm fairly sure you wouldn't get hired if you were extensively modded (a nose piercing or something small is probably okay though).

A good point - one of the guys I went to college with is store manager (or deputy store manager...I haven't spoken to him in about a year) for Waterstones...He looks like he should be working at Cyberdog...Bloody woolyheads.

As I expected: Another IT Monkey.

I enjoy my job, work with a great bunch of people and couldn't wish for more. What's wrong with working in IT?

Well done. But once again you, and all the other 'modders', neglect the fact we are talking about real jobs, not a studenty part time stacking shelves/serving at a till job that anyone can get.

As an aside, I've also worked in sales (face to face too, ducky ;)) and account management...For Cisco nonetheless...

...But you'll ignore that because you've already shown that you only partially quote posts which you can use to enforce your bewilderingly backward world view.

Wear all your accessories to a real job interview and see what happens.
I wear all of my jewelery to every interview. Removing it would gain nothing. What makes the interviews I have had any less 'real' than any others?

I still don't understand it though. What the **** is the point in modding yourself up into a cartoon character?

I like the way my modifications look and feel. I don't pretend to have some deep mystical influence or reasoning. I simply enjoy them on an aesthetic and physical level. If you can't understand that, you must have a room temperature IQ. If you like, I can explain it monosylabically for you...Perhaps I can draw a diagram?

His father is an oil baron, I have a sneaky suspicion that might be what's "working out ok for him".

His own businesses seem to be doing just fine. BME is a hugely popular site, in fact it's the only really good body mods site on the net, and has a huge userbase. It does well.

Why is it impossible for you to believe it's his work?

Do you think his dad coded the casino site too?

From BME website: "What’s New Today (Sep 26)"

Must be doing well to be kept so up to date.

I believe entirely it's his work, I don't believe it's profitable enough to afford a £40,000 Porsche and enough capital to fly around the world filming a BME film.
