The Benifits of Decent Cooling on a 8800GT (Accelero S1)

Here's what i got

S1 VGA Cooler
Akasa AK-TT12-80 Thermal Adhesive Tape
2 X Sharkoon Silent Eagle 1000 120mm Fan
Some extra zalman heatsinks

Fans are 1000rpm and meant to be very quiet. I have cable ties already

Right, update time.

I am now posting from my new system again. It turns out that this sticker (about an inch in diameter, quite thick black and glossy, with OC in big letters and then overclocked written underneath) was the cause of my problem with the fan not working, it was catching on the blades. Where has this come from? and what was it doing there in the first place?

Anyway sticker removed with some cany tweezer work and fan now moving. I have now installed Rivatuner and set the fan speed to 75% (why the hell is it not set higher by default I don't know, this will cause a lot of people getting burnt out cards I think) and with COD4 running at the same settings as before my GPU temp maxed at 72c (managable for now until I get more cooling). Don't think I am going to go down the S1 route yet, gonna try other methods to get the temp down for now and monitor the situation.

But happy days for now, my card isn't screwed after all, something for other people with my problem to look at too.

Great forum chaps, I will be sticking around here for as long as I am welcome.

I've ordered an S1 and a sharkoon 120mm fan to fit on it, can anyone who has stuck one on NOT used velcro on it and if not does it vibrate much? I really don't want to go from this annoying rattle to another annoying rattle:eek:

I didn't, but I used a Nexus fan, which is one of the best out there.

Zipties worked for me too.. to be honest I couldn't figure out any other way of getting the fan on. Temps never go above about 50 deg C now under full load. Mucho impressed.

the accerlo s1 wont allow a sli configuration will it?

ive just gone and ordered 2, like a MUG

Depends how far your slots are apart (differs from motherboard to motherboard) and whether you plan to run passively or with fans.

Passively you will have space.

You might have room for a slimline fan on each or set up a wind tunnel with one 120mm or 140mm at the end of the cards blowing down both cards.

i ordered 2 akasa amber fans :( wow i shouldve really looked into this before spending £70 lol

so your sure the sli bridge will fit through the coolers? thats the main concern.

just at a glance, the 2 slots on my p5ne look about 10 cm apart, is that far apart enough do you think?

You need a flexible SLI bridge as the coolers are higher than the card i;m afraid.

phew, i have the flexible bridge. thats ok then. worst comes to worst ill just mash up my case and create a wind tunnel with the 2 akasa ambers at the end. due for a case mod this xmas anyway. might make a project out of it. thanks for the fast help

edit: just noticed this was covered one page before (the page i didnt check)

Just fitted my S1 onto my new 8800GT and I'm stunned by how much it cools this card passively. The card idles at about 37 degrees and on full load goes up to at max 50 degrees!

Thats also with a PNY card clocked at 700/1750/2000 :D

is it easy to fit? i have never changed a gfx cooler. do you need to add thermal paste to the core?

Erm, i found the clips that come with the cooler hard to fit. There is no clear place to put them and must have taken me a good 15 mins to fit. Otherwise yes its fairly straight forward, just time consuming if you want to clean up the graphics card properly.

The thermal paste that comes on the cooler already is good enough, i read back further in the thread that its the MX-2 thermal compound.

Yeah the clips are a major PITA!

I just got mine up and running - S1 & 2 sharkoon 120mm 1000rpm strapped on:p
