256mg 3950 vs 512mb 3850

Do you mean the 256MB 3870XT against the 512MB 3850 Pro? Just that I don't see a 3950.

I'd take the XT if I had to choose one, but if I had the money to spend i'd buy neither.

The 3870 has more memory for high res, most games will use this now. It also has higher clocks and will overclock higher since 3850 has an artifical cap so cant clock as highly

well the difference is as the title i guess. 256mb of vram. it would be common sense to get the 512mb version, as most modern games go over 256mb of vram.

if you want anything graphically pretty turned on, I would suggest getting the 512mb. The 256mb will be used up pretty quickly even at 1280*1024 (i would assume), in most modern games with high quality textures and aa/hdr etc.

You dont have to get 512mb but the game will use it like people have said. It will use system memory instead when it runs out which is a bit slower, Im not certain how badly it affects fps but it might make things laggy sometimes

The a certain 3D review site has benchmarks that should give a good indication of how performance is affected.

Easy, 3950's a fake as it doesn't exist. :D

Id get a 512mb now, as a 256mb card will be memory limited with all the newer games out/coming out that need more vram for bigger textures etc...

some games like GRAW won;t even allow you to select resolution higher than 1280x1024 or enable high rez texture setting unless you have a 512mb card.

for this day and age 512mb is a must even if your gonna game at 1280x1024.
