Been to Thailand?

We like the Soi 4 area too, stayed at the bottom of there earlier this year ( Majestic Grande ) , the area has a great buzz to it at night

If I'm slumming it then I stay at the Atlanta, which is run down, but it's very cheap and has a charm and attitude I like.

Otherwise I tend to stay at the Nai Lert on Wireless Road. It has the added advantage of being right next to the British Embassy, in case the next coup goes a bit breasts-up.

I've only been twice , used the Majestic and the Landmark, both in similar area and nice hotels

I'll be looking out for CHEAP hostels that arnt too bad. Looking at a few quid a night. Atlanta sounds like a good one. Thanks for the info on no-go districts! (i' ll have a night in and tell my mate theres some good cheap hookers around there!)

You won't be able to take them back to the Atlanta though!

Most of the pictures were taken a while ago, so it's a bit more run-down now, but it's still cheap, clean and safe. The food is excellent, but don't go for the Jungle Curry unless you are an expert, and make sure you are well hydrated beforehand ;)

I lived in Chiang Mai for 3 years, moved back here 9 years ago. I lived in Chiang Mai and i have to echo what others have said, Chiang Mai is really excellent. Great scenery, friendly people, lots to do. Have a look at the numerous temples in the area and don't leave until you've been to an elephant camp and had an elephant ride! The country areas are really where you get to see the full culture of the Thai people.

Having said that, Bangkok is still worth a visit, however i would much rather spend most of my time in Chiang Mai after visiting Bangkok for a few days.

Another nice place to visit while you're there is Phee Phee Island which is a small island not far from Phuket. http://www.phuket.com/island/phiphi.htm

What sort of rooms will i be expecting for £3 a night? Ive heard you can find hostels that are almost free if you dont mind sharing with others. Not too bothered about much really, just a shower and somewhere to lie down

I went to Phi Phi ( I assume we are talking about same place ) and couldn't see what the fuss was about, supposed to be some idillic getaway but was just like any other resort area, lods of shops and multinational hotel chains

my cheapest was 100baht a night, about £1.50 a night on ko pha ngan. i couldn't of slept in there sober as i knew awful creatures were crawling around my face and on my bed but was too scared to turn the light on. moved on after one night and ended up paying 200baht for a nice beach hut, double bed, shower, toilet and mosi net with amazing view of haad rin.

thats what im talking about £3 for beach hut, toilet, shower and mozzy net. Yeh i dont think i could stand things crawling on my face and a filthy matress is horrid (i will be taking my own bed sheets however)

What are the job like in thailand, we will be needing to work most of the time to pay for things. Is it easy enough to get manual jobs like digging holes, picking fruit etc Of course we would like a nice paying office job but i dont think it will happen somehow

edit - as trescodrucey has a spare 20 grand i may put on a private ping pong show myself for him!

But you've not taken into account drinking buckets of sang-tip and coke until your eyes bleed every night or going to do karaoke at an illegal triad gambling den until the sun comes back up. You know, the fun stuff that really makes Thailand fun. ;)
