^- quick question..

wondering if its worth changing to 2 SLI 8800 GT's for the FPS increase from a single GTX.

From what ive seen in benchmarks it seems like quite a bit more performance over a single GTX.. plus from where i can get 2 of these ill have money spare from my GTX after i sell it.

Mainly looking at minimum FPS..

worth it?

btw.. does it matter if its asus/xfx or whatever? i take it they all clock the same?. Asus should be easiest to get a hold of from what i can see.

i use a 22" bearing in mind that some games do benefit a lot from the max res of even a monitor of this size.

You would need sell the 8800GTX to a noob on E Gay as it wont fetch that much from peeps in the know how here, esp now after the 8800GT launch, its worth far less than you think.

I think is not worth it now esp as your value has fallen, possibly a few weeks ago but also SLI is not that good and not supported well.

Wait and see if the new 8800GTS will beat your GTX.

You would almost certainly get more out of your GTX if you were to upgraded your CPU, even a 3ghz x2 opty would still prove to be a bottleneck.

Also although a quality component your 600watt psu is pretty much minimum spec for an sli 8800gt setup.

If you have a SLI mobo there really is no excuse as to why you haven’t sold the 8800GTX and bought two 8800GT's already as far as I’m concerned

But I disagree with others, you can still get a good price for your 8800GTX as there are allot of noobs about who really don't have a clue. You will probably get £225-250, maybe a little more if you’re lucky but don't expect more as your can buy them new for less then £300 now.

if i can sell my GTX for £280+ then id break even.

... I think that's way too optimistic. How old is the card? New ones go for £300 so £280 for a second hand card isn't likely to happen.

My 2p on SLI (coming from someone who had SLI'd 6800s and 7800s): Don't do it. Why?

a) Not all games support SLI. In games that don't, you will use just the single GT (not so bad...)

b) Not all games support SLI well. If it's minimum framerate you're interested in, you may well see a reduction (even though the average and maximum framerates will inevitably increase).

c) In AFR mode (alternate frame rendering), which is the most popular SLI mode of operation, the frames *aren't output uniformly*. So, the gap between frames is always greater than or equal to that with a single card working at the same rate. It's this gap that the eye notices, rather than the raw number of frames per second output. Bottom line? In AFR mode, 60fps does not seem as smooth as 60fps with a single card

d) Your CPU doesn't really justify a faster graphics setup. A large proportion of your game scenes will be somewhat CPU limited. In these games scenes, the framerate will not improve even if every other factor is working well. The best you will get in these cases is an almost free upgrade of the AA (or resolution)

In conclusion, don't go SLI. I would recommend saving for a nice core2 setup, and wait for the next generation of cards. You need a balanced system rather than just buckets of useless GPU capacity.

Based soley on benchmarks quoting average FPS over a period of time, you would be correct.

Look a little deeper and you will see the problems.

go sli. its definately worth it, and all DECENT games utilize it, at least to some extent. and new games are always patched and drivers are always released. theyll use less power aswell

Read what I said, he needs to sell it on E Gay, no one here thats half clued up with buy his GTX for a good price. ;)

And the fact a new GTX can be had for £300

im fairly confident they do when idle

A pair of ATI HD3800 series cards will use less than a single GTX, there very efficient when not under load.

right at this minute Cossfire seems to be very impressive, although a single HD3870 is not to much to challenge a single 8800gt, once paired up in crossfire you can see this solution scales much better than an sli setup, closing the gap, and in quite a few games excels. Add to the fact crossfire is the multi-card choice with many motherboard using the most latest intel chipset that support the new 45nm quad intel chips, favouring crossfire maybe a pretty wise decision.

Right at this very minute I feel there’s nothing in it, but I feel crossifire will make a lot of sense soon.

If you fancy selling your GTX to me I will take it off you for 200quid :D

Big flaw there, your right people here wont buy his 8800GTX for a decent price but the noobs on "E-Gay" will, unless you think the general hardware knowledge here is equal to users on "E-Gay" :D

I saw an EVGA 8800GT SSC go for £350 on ebay a few weeks ago  no one here in their right mind would spend that much on an 8800GT regardless of clock speed or availability!

Well finally i managed to get 2 of these elsewhere, not the price i wanted though could have gotten them around 60 quid cheaper but stock is hard to find.. i got each one for £170+

ill be selling the GTX on the bay as soon as i get these 2 puppies tomorrow :)

Asustek cards btw.
