Future lawyers - how's the studying and the job search?

My uncle runs a solicitors and says it's always hard finding good trainees/grads, they either just plain aren't very good, or want stupidly (well, relatively) high salaries from the off :)

How're you guys getting funding to do the law conversion? As I'm essentially from a 'poor background' and have used my savings for studying this degree, I could in theory work in summer but there's no way I'd raise enough for a law conversion!

I'm currently in my first year at College studying Law as one of my four AS-levels. I'm very interested in going on to do a Law degree at University, and then eventually qualifying as a solicitor. I understand I'll need to undertake a one year LPC course after University. Is the LPC taken at University or somewhere else? Is there anything I can do now which could increase my chances of getting a training contract in the future? Is there anything else I should now? Any advice?

Allegedly doing law at A level decreases your chances (at university), but don't know if that was actually true as I went on to do History! I did Law at AS and got an E (****** teaching), got a D in it at A level but with B's in the 2nd year modules. Makes me wonder if I should even do law hehe, I really enjoyed it just disliked the exams.

Afaik the LPC is done at seperate law colleges but some universities are offering it, I think UWE is.

Good question, it depends on the policy of the particular law firm. Many of the big city firms will definitely look at your A-levels but generally the High street solicitors wont be too bothered providing you have a good degree. I've even heard that candidates have been turned away because of poor GCSEs!

After the LLB, do A levels inlfuence anything, or is it just the degree that matters?

A-levels do matter after your degree depending on the type of firm you want to join. I know a lot of the larger city firms will require a certain grade at degree level but will also require certain A level grades.

That's the reality though I'm afraid.
It's really really not. You just have to look at a couple of chambers websites to prove you wrong. In addition, if you look at the intake at BVC providers you'll quickly see that people with a 1st from Oxbridge are very few.

Although not to sound harsh but you won't be able to get into London with those kinds of grade and you'll find it difficult elsewhere too.
College of Law asks for a minimum 2:2 across the board. Whether you want to study at Guildford, London or Boris Johnson's house you stand just as much chance of getting on the BVC with a 2:2 - and that chance is pretty high.

No London law firm worth working at will consider you with a 2:2 unless you can pull some magic out of your backside. And no commercial chambers in London will consider you without a 1st or again, some magical trump card.

Any old chump can do the BVC or LPC but that's not really the point.

The Law Schools are not difficult to get into. You have to apply to three different LPC/BVC providers through the Central Admissions Board (CAB) and have a really short statement (about 500 words or something like that). Basically because you are paying around £10k they are happy to take you on providing you have at least a 2:2 and probably even a 3rd.
