Do long VGA cables loose quality?

Hi,

I have a laptop which has vista media centre on it so i bought a cheap £5 belkin 5m VGA cable to connect it to my LCD TV.

Now it all connects and works fine although the quality is a little untidy. Where there are text or lines, there looks to be a sort of faint ghost to the sides that gets fainter and fainter.

I have connected a 1 meter VGA cable (free with a TFT) and the problem goes away.

Do i need to buy a more expensive cable ? If so what can you recommend?

Thanks allot, im liking the media centre allot so far :)

VGA is an analogue standard, so you will see attenuation and interference. the VGA cable contains many small wires, and they are likely to be unshielded which makes them very susceptible to interference from both outside (the cable) EM fields, and the other wires themselves, which will also cause a degradation in image quality.

a more expensive cable might help, but only if the increase in price was because of individual strand/wire shielding, as opposed to "gold plated connectors" and such.

:)

I've run a 50m VGA cable before in a church installation to a projector. Once up on a 9ft screen any noticeable loss in quality was really not that noticeable at all.

They do. I almost always notice a loss in quality when I introduce a VGA switch box or KVM in to the path, most likely down to poor quality equipment!

Yep, it's best not to have them longer than 1 metre...

Better quality cables (and connectors) will give better results...

Thanks guys,

Do you have any recommendations ?

This seems to be the most expensive 5m cable on a site im looking on:
Belkin Pro Series High Integrity VGA/SVGA Monitor Replacement Cable 5m - £9.50

Would that be worth a shot ? Or can anyone find a better one. I dont mind paying more.

I've used a 5m VGA to a projector, just changed to a 4.5M DVI-HDMI and it doesnt really look any different.
Give the Belkin pro a try, if you notice poor quality send it back.
