I usually get 18Mbps true at peak times?
Virgin 50mb to launch next year.

I live in the midst of the student centre in Manchester, all the student shared houses have cable. Its terrible at peak, when there are no students the speeds are brilliant though.
Nope , 50Mb refers to the amount you'll be able to download before you're capped for the rest of the day

they have a good back bone system, remember for every disgruntled post about NTL you see, there are a thousand happy customers
and there are over 2 million of them. what's more you get what you pay for on virgin. if you buy a 4mb Cable line, its 4mb, where as on an adsl connection if you buy an 8mb line, your guess is anyones as its dependant on distance from the exchange, quality of the wire, weather conditions ect ect.thats usually the way it goes, although expect the 50mb service to be rolled out to business first with residential a few months after.
i dont know why people complain about being slowed down by 50% between 4pm and midnight when youve downloaded over a certain amount. This is a totally fair policy, the fairest out there.I am a rampant downloader but i dont see why my online habbits should be allowed to totally clog the network and steal the bandwidth from the majority of ordinary Broadband users. Virgin have stated they will never traffic shape, and they will never cap your downloadable amount per month.

Those 1000 happy customers to every one, are probably just happy they can check thier email and read the horoscopes, they probably wouldnt notice if they were cut back to a 2mb connection.
I would (and have) ditch the provider if I was slowed down at certain times, how can that be fair policy, unless they refund a percentage of your monthly fee to compensate for the lack of service?
They should sort out a decent upload speed - it's getting ridiculously unbalanced.

I've had Virgin 20mb for about a month now and am thoroughly unimpressed. It rarely gets anywhere near 20mb, infact it rarely gets near 10mb. I'd say it spends 90% of it's time at around the 4-6mb mark.
If I wasn't getting it so cheap (£15) I'd cancel straight away, there's no way on earth it's worth £37 p/m. Only good thing about it is the upload speed, that's pretty much always full speed @ 80KB/s.

Just thought i'd shed some light on this.
STM will NOT be applied to the 50mbit tier, there will be no caps.
It wont affect the other tiers on the network as it'll be on a different frequency, effectively giving 2 different networks down the same line.
A huge amount of hardware upgrades are being done after the new year which should solve speed problems with current docsis1 tiers.
It will be £47/month
Upload speed is uncertain, we havent finished trials on that yet, but right now it's at 1.5mbit (pathetic i know)

its fair because its a simple way to avoid the problems other ISP`s have with regards to excessive bandwidth use by less than 10% of their subscriber base.
at the end of the day they are one of the cheapest, they are one of the few with no monthly download limits, if your on the cable structure you get the speed advertised unlike ADSL. The only snag is that they restrict the bandwidth at peak times which is totally fair and preferable to traffic shaping that most other ISP`s employ.
at the end of the day, if you don't like their service, leave.

Just to point out, 50mb will be done over DOCSIS 3 and the current connections will stay as they are.
This means in effect that 50mb users will be on totally different terminating equipment/ubrs - this is where the problem currently lies with congestion.
Therefore the introduction of 50mb will be totally separate from lower speeds, and will not affcet lower tiers.

does that mean that at the start only a select few places will have the capabilities of habving the 50mb connections?
kind of. Its not just a case of sending out a modem from a specific date.
It will be a region by region rolling update when equipment is installed. However all areas will be upgraded - the pace of the rollout isn't yet known.

judging by the service I get now it won't be up to much, I'm paying for 20Mb and getting no more than 5Mb, so that would make it pay for 50Mb and get about 12.5Mb on a good day
