I own both a DS and a Wii before anyone acuses me of being a fanboy.

Nintendo quoted at E3 "We are serious about online gaming".

Are they?

They have the most ham fisted friends system in the world and with the amount of games coming out which have little to NO internet play of any kind, I have to believe that they are making it as difficult for developers as possible for whatever reason.

The Wii would be great for CO-OP play yet soo many games dont include it.

The lack of online play in Mario And Sonic at the Olympic Games as really annoyed me.

No downloadable content for Guitar Hero III.

Limited games with CO-OP play which the Wii would be great for.

"Yes, but the Wii is a more sociable console" - Why say they were SERIOUS about online gaming then.

They seem to be anything but.

E.A had to resort to using their own network to implement anything remotely deecent on the Wii.

Thank goodness I have my PC for everything else.

They're serious about it but they're very new to it and have made the mistake this generation of not having a unified friends list.

Smash bros and mario kart will be fantastic online if MKDS and MP:H is anything to go by. Their DS online efforts work very well tbh and I'm not sure why the Wii falls behind.

yeah they do need an online system but as said they are learning, plus after the gamecube I'd rather just have more titles coming out rather than a few with online stuff. That said I would buy a wii for online mario kart and smash bro's

Only problem with the current system is the 'Friends' codes that you have to enter for each individual game. If they had a unified list it'd be far better.

Other than that the online play for the DS is great.

I play loads of Mario Kart, 42in1, and StarFox!

Admittedly, the DS system is great for an hendheld and works well.

The Wii implementation seems lacking on most fronts for me, not even VOIP in games.

The problem is simply that they've never programmed network/internet stuff before really (since the GC's network adapter idea never went anywhere), and they're too insular a company to think of getting someone far more experienced in that kind of thing in to help them.

That's why the 360 was such a revelation in an online service to people. Not because it does anything new, but because MS have been doing that kind of thing for years with Windows.

Smash Bros looks like having a cool online service (spectator and betting modes), so they'll get there in time.

I disagree.

They just seem to have a conflict of interest to me. The lack of unified friends list, voice chat/comms and messaging service has all been to maintain a child friendly system. They should have implemented all those features from the start but allowed parental restrictions rather than leaving them out all together.

I just want smash bros/mario kart online so I can read all the people whining on here about snaking, wave dashing, L- cancelling, shining, CCC etc. :p

I'm putting it down to incompetence with regard to design decisions. Leaving out vital features to make a system 'child friendly' just sounds like making excuses to me. I would think having to put in a long code for each person wanting to go on the other's friends list completely goes against what you've just said as well. Not child-friendly at all, compared to how it's done on the 360 and PS3. For all the Wii's ingenuinity, Nintendo has a lot to learn, and a lot to catch up with if they are to offer a viable successor to the console in future. It has been two generations now that they are behind on online features and aspects. It's not good enough.

Yet you can send all the abuse you want through the email system?

I'd agree with Knives, it just seems like the slightly poor decisions of a company not versed in making an online service before. There's no reason a unified friends list would really make it any less child safe, and you said it yourself, they should have allowed parental controls to give us the option.

Only if you give out your friends code, and even then only other wii users can email you unless you email them first from your wii.

I'm agreeing it's a poor system, I'm just saying it's not from lack of programming talent but from going about it in the wrong way.

Erm... what? I'm saying the child friendly approach is the incompetent design choice, not differentiating them!

That's what I was saying though. ;)

Not bad programming, just being unused to programming online stuff before, and thus having no idea how to design it.

Did the gamecube actually ever have any online titles? I know they released the adaptor for it, but as far as I remember no titles ever made use of it

Arent they meant to be implementing a system that will Download Demo's for the Wii/DS, and 2008 will be a spark for Nintendo, the new pokemon game will feature online play, smash bros will and Mario Kart will be no end of fun!

I cant wait for January Nevermind Christmas
