My old mans mobo/grfx blew the otherday so I said I'd get him some cheap parts to replace them. He was using an old P4 2.8 and a 9800Pro for graphics. Quite old, but OK.

He uses his computer for the surfing, TVersity for when he wants to stream to his PS3, dvd burning, pretty much everything with the odd older game now and then (uses PS3 for gaming but likes ot have a bash on some games).

I guess he may as well dual core and I don't mind hunting through members market but I have no idea where to start. Depending on how cheap parts are I may buy new, but if I can get better for the same price 2nd hand, why not.

So essentially, he needs motherboard/cpu/graphics ... I guess some new ram might be useful, probably around 1-2GB.

What kind of items could we find for say £150? What's the best I could get?

I'd try something like that then pick up a cheap GFX card somewhere its got OC potential so could work well for him and hopefully keep him going for a bit.

If the pc is only going to be used for general web browsing and or office for instance then there's no need for the Arctic Freezer cooler surely ? As the stock intel heatsink would be fine ...

Cheers guys. Thanks for the oc'ing option. To be honest, my Dads not too fussed about anything like that now. He doesn't play the most recent games and with his PS3 he'll be OK, but just something that will be a bit quicker than his old P4/512MB/9800 setup.

Like I say, I'm happy to hunt through members market, just wondered what was the best combo as the last machine I built (which shows how long ago it was) was an old 3700+/7800GT/2Gb machine, so I'm out of touch :p

It was more as an OC option to be honest I probably should have stated that. Personally Kol I'd buy the main parts new then get a cheap GFX card on the market or a well known auction site.

Nice one - thanks Aero. If he wasn't to OC what would you suggest otherwise? Or is that the best value for money deal? Also, yeah, graphics cards seem to be relatively cheap so will do that.

Well that processor is clocked at 1.6ghz but "apparently" can be OC to 3ghz quite easily or so I hear (correct me if I'm wrong please) but either way I think your dad would notice a fairly large difference. However the AMD 4000+ X2 would also be worth a look if not overclocking.

Are you sure the graphics card of your dad's old PC is broken? This board has AGP and PCI-E so you just get ANY second hand card for cheap :)
