Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy a car for as little cash as possible purely to tide me over a month or two whilst i either get my car fixed, or find the time to do it myself......what's reliable and cheap? I'm not put off by petrol consumption, i'm used to sweet **** all anyway, just something that is gonna be reliable for a couple of months, and is going to be reasonably easy to get my money back on, or cheap enough that i could literally scrap it if need be.....I'm thinking volvo?

What've you got guys? If you're being more location specific, anywhere around the rochdale/oldham or halifax kind of area is good, i still have transport in the form of my gf's car to go buy them :p

Tom.

If you're worried about spending £700 on repairing your current car then a banger car really isn't going to hold very well... There's quite a big potential to buy a car that is completely fubar'd that you'll never sell on

The cheapest way of doing this would be not to buy a banger, but to buy a decent in demand hatchback from your local auction house. You will likely see a profit which could well pay for the engine work on the mondeo.

Decent in demand hatchbacks are not found for "as little money as possible" which is the OP's requirement, whilst I agree with you jez, his pocket does not I think.

I am currently on the road for a measly £5 a week :D

Car is a Golf Mk3 1995 Driver with 135K
Given to me by my mother when she bought her audi
Insurance and tax paid for by work as they owed me £400.

Drive back and for to work on about £5 for the week.

Long journies we take the wifes Leon.

Not bad after owning an Impreza for 4 years :)

it's more that i refuse to pay that much for something i know i could do myself given a few days to do it in! I'm gonna see how much my local friendly mechanic will want, he's normally ludicrously cheap as he's a retired ford employee who has kitted up his garage at home and does stuff in his spare time.

Also, being without a car is a massive no no, and most mechanics will take a couple of days at least to fit me in and do the job? I live 20 miles from work with no public transport, and i can't even dream of taking time off at this time of year.

indeed, this time a couple of months ago i wouldve done exactly that but unfortunately my recent spending spree has wiped out my savings :( Short of sticking it on a card or getting a loan i couldnt afford to spend more than a few hundred quid really

i've actually realised that if the car is done by the end of next week, i could get by without a car....my gf drives past a train station on the same line as halifax on the way to college, so could drop me off of a morning :)
