Is buying the Evga 680I a really bad idea? Tell me your stories people

When the new gforce 9 cards come out will they be similar prices to when the G8s came out do you recon? if they came out in february and i bought one in june perhaps prices may have droped a tad? I wonder if the G9s might last a year also. As the G8s are still coping pretty well.

Although Crysis 2 has been signaled to be in the making now. Perhaps taht will destroy the G9s lmao.

helmutcheese is very knowledgeable about the graphic card scene hopefully he will re- post shortly to your inquiry

The top 9000 Series card will cost lots but no more than the 8800GTX did at new as of cost of living etc then till now (I mean like for like not some X2 card if any appear, and I aint going to guess specs like other threads as total waste of time).

At the rate your going Dave you will still be dithering on the 10,000 Series. :p

Buy a non Nvidia Mobo now or wait weeks on real peeps reviews on the 780's, you still wont need go SLI.

I would also not judge a card on Crysis the way it stands for now, as you know well my views on this game.

Lol helm :p I was going to upgrade in september but decided to wait for the 9800 series in november :( But i gues its best i waited as now i can get a GTS or GT for a lot less. I will probably just get a single GTs and either P35 or 38x. Or perhaps 3870s in crossfire lmao :p

And then upgrade to a 9800 in june with a 24"

I have had 3 680i boards and every one of them was a corking board. All surpassed the 500fsb mark and overclocking memory was very easy due to the near infinite amount of dividers available (unlinked). Couldn't be happier with them and can honestly say they have been the best boards I have worked with overclocking wise.

Support from EVGA is second to none and one of the main reasons there are so many complaints about them is that EVGA are upfront and honest regarding any problems with the boards through there support forum. Visit Asus or gigabyte 'support' forums and you will find there isn't a wealth of info about there own boards or any reps answering any queries you may have. They were the first to offer free RMA on the boards to support quad overclocking, something I doubt Asus or gigabyte would do. The NV raid solution also appeared faster than both intels ICH8/r and 9/r in my view and never had a corrupt OS, even in raid 0, due to over exerting the chipset.

Sadly the 680i chipset has been beaten by the P35 and X38 chipsets now with quads and future cpu support but for dual core I wouldn't hesitate recommending one - especially if SLI is important to you.

I think you were one of the lucky ones W3bbo, you had some fantastic clocks. The board I had was inconsistant with overclocking. I was a few hours away from ordering 2 x 8800GT's when the news about retail Yorkfield not working properly on 680i came out. I might try 780i but I am put off from my past experience and will probably go crossfire instead.

Very honest, sound statement. W3bbo ,dual cores did perform well with the 680i but alternatively would it not be better to wait for the 780i over the 680i as it is so close to release?

Well reports suggest the 780 is simply a 680i with a pcie2 bridging chip incorporated so I wouldn't bother with 780i if thats all it is(unless you want dual core). Rumours abound though that the 790i is an intel based platform with SLI - again pure speculation and most likely horse crap due to the recent turn of events with intel vs nvidia. I would hold fire buying any nvidia based board if you want a yorkie until the chipset issues are resolved.

Thanks guys. Think ill just gety a single GTS to purely give me a reason to upgrade later haha :)

When was the GT added to the website? Want to try get a gts quickly within the first few hours

My BFG 680i is fine, bought it originally 2nd hand, and clocked like a dream, but i had the screaming capacitors issue, they rma'd it, and i had it back within the week (posted monday, recieved on friday...)

I also managed to kill that one, but that was purely me being stupid.

All 3 have had 500fsb+ on dual cores, and the last 2 have had 500fsb on a quad (currently running 400x9, don't really need any more tbh)

The last 2 also had no problems at all with running 4x1gb, and currently they can clock to 1200mhz (although i run them at 800mhz)

Infact, the only issue i had with clocking the ram is, that the one set of ballistix i had wouldn't go above 1400mhz, and the only reason it wouldn't go higher is because the boards limit is 1400mhz

I will agree with everyone else though, unless sli is 100% essential, there isn't any point in getting one of these boards.

Nice informative post V|per, wish my BFG had that type performance you refer to.

So perhaps they arn't as bad as people say.

Either way ive decided id rather a new 9800 around june some time with a new 24" with hopefuly better viewing angles with a 2ms responce then whats currently avalible, failing that just a bit cheaper would be nice :) lol.

The Asus are, there is more with issues that those without, obv if you want to run total stock speeds and nothiong is actualyl faulty on Mobo you will have less issues.

This is last time I mention how bad the crap 680i's are, seems your back on the Road to Hell for one.

Its old now and new one means support dies for this which is pretty crap support anyhow, inc Drivers from Nvidia.

Na im not back on the road. Currently looking at the x38 boards. Id rather get a single card then upgrade to a 9800GTX around june. If i dont have sli and i get a 24" ive then got an excuse :)

Just had a talk with the walking ATM and they seem to have agreed to upgrade to a new screen some time after christmas, so probably around february/march and they also seem to have agreed to upgrading the 8800GTS to something more powerful but i didn't drop the bomb on the cost, after all... ignorance is bliss. Think ill go half and half with them on it as otherwize i doubt they will.

How much do you recon the GTS will be worth around june?

How much do you recon the GTS will be worth around june?

currently they are around £258-£260 inc VAT they may drop to between £230-£240 inc VAT?

It would also depend on new card releases due around that time period. Also if a large number of units have been sold and the demand is still there the prices wont drop at all

If its June you intend to purchase consider MM maybe?
