Well, I've been at this setup for a few days now and have finally managed to tame this 9500

MOFO64 presents the worlds first RETAIL oc'd B1 9500 to reach 3GHZ (not B1....B2 - typo at the time)

After many hours of trying lots of settings, MOFO is proud to announce that this phenom (and others aswell no doubt) can hit 3ghz (albeit very unstable).

Motherboard used MSi 790X.....CPU X4 9500 @ 2904mhz (cpuz verified).....RAM 4GB ADATA DDR2-800 @ 880mhz 5,5,5,15,24,2t

I use WPCREDIT to drop the NB mutli to x7 I managed to attain this OC.

Firstly due to this boards bios, I cannot access memory timings....only divider....however it detects my memory modules spd timings np.

There is also no NB multi access (dunno if there is supposed to be) so this is where WPCREDIT helps enormously.

1...I boot with a FSB of 215mhz, 1.560v vcore, 1.40v NB, HTx of 3.

2...Once on desktop open cpu and use mem tab to check NB speed.

3...open WPcredit and change NBx to 7 using 00011B, apply, close restart.

4...allow system to restart but do not enter bios.

5...once on desktop again open cpu and check NB multi & speed are properly applied, you'll see they are.

6...Now I use AOD to increase cpu fsb slowly. Do not increase anymore than 2mhz at a time as 30mhz-40mhz increases can cause lockups :(

That's some setup mate :), but seriously though, 27 seconds pi 1M??? Doesn't look great, tbh.

waterchiller?

not a good sign if it needs that amount of cooling to hit 3Ghz..... well, 2.9Ghz....

nice work though.

I've been messing with this setup for a week now and decided to eliminate every possibilty of anything being an issue. It's more a case of flakey bios and NB speeds to to contend with. The chip does 2.7ghz on stock volts with air so the cooling I used was most likely overkill.

No, I admit initially it looks a little weak. I did however have my memory very slack (440mhz 5,5,5,18,2t) when it can do 420mhz 3,4,4,12,2t so that would make a small difference. Also the cpu was only at 2850mhz....still 150mhz shy of 3Ghz. With a 3Ghz + 9500 running DDR2-1066mhz at 1200mhz (4,4,4,12,1t) then I'm sure we'd see much better results.

SPi has never been a bench where amd does very well. Comparing this cpu to say a 3700+ at 3106mhz netting 26sec pi times with DDR500 @ 2,3,3,5,1t and it looks quite good in relation. Sure the Pi times are around the same but this cpu has 4 cores for multi-tasking where as the 3700+ has only one. This cpu is also 25% cheaper on release than an A64 3700+ sandy was on it's release :)

what a name MOFO64 lol

good job, are you going to run some other benchmarks?
cinebench, sandra / gaming etc..

I certainly will bud. I'm setting up now for some more runs tonight so I'll post back with a good few benches in a couple of hours.

Good clock, can you not have the HT any higher than that though, must limit the chip a bit?

This too will be explored tonight.

Respect....
That looks like it took a serious amount of effort.
Hats off to you..

Yeah just a little mate....worth it in the end though.

Thanx :)

I like the look of that. Still waiting for my Phenom to come in stock so I can order it. :(
Looks like they overclock nicely, be good to see what the 9700 can push to on air. What temps are you getting under load with that cooling system?

Seems a bit crap (the chip that is, not your efforts)... a q6600 will beat it on air no problem.

lol....yeah for sure a q6600 will clock higher in a decent mobo, but it's early days yet :)

with stock HSF and stock volts it idles at 28c-30c....loaded around 48c.

with watercooling and max vcore of 1.560v idle is 14c-16c.....loaded single core is 24c and loaded 4x cores never breaks 45c.

fair point. be interesting to see the rest of your results. Sandra memory in particular if you have the time.

sure thing mate.

Crikes, 45'C on water. Looks like I may have to upgrade the Arctic Freezer afterall.

yeah it's a tad higher than I expected myself. My pump is gettin' old now and flow rate has dropped a little but I wouldn't expect that to account for anymore than say 5c loaded at most.

With this in mind, does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for an improved aircooled solution?
I was looking at the Tuniq Tower.
Just wondering how it fairs up in comparison to the Arctic Freezer? Or if there are better options for around the same budget (£35-£40).

IBM come and save AMD plzzzz. :(
Hope AMD get 65nm going fast as their planning to move onto 45nm in 2009 so not a long time compared to what 90nm had.

AMD`s 65nm tech has been in production for nearly a year now, the phenom is a new core on the 65nm process.

its my hope that once AM2 and AM2+ are killed off (and rightfully so as its a dismal platform) that AM3 will introduce the support structure phenom needs to fly.

bear in mind that the c2d can essentially run with a 5 issue core on super pi, but on almost nothing else. extremely simple programs setup a certain way can run stupidly fast, but basically other things won't ever match super pi performance.
