8800 GT / GTS worth the upgrade from x1800?

Feb 2005. The month I upgraded my PC last.

Dec 2007. The month I bought my next upgrade.

I've upgraded from the following,

AMD Athlon 3700+-------Q6600 G0
ASUS A8N-e-------------ASUS P5K Premium
Corsair 1GB DDR---------Corsair 4GB DDR2
ATi X1800 XT------------Nvidia ???? ?????

I'm happy with the new items I've bought so far, but looking into the graphics cards I'm a bit confused.

Looking at the new 8800GT and comparing to the X1800 I have this result.

8800 GT-----------------------------X1800 XT

core running at 675MHz--------------core running at 625MHz
256-Bit Memory Interface------------256-Bit Memory Interface
GDDR3 Memory running at 1950MHz---GDDR3 Memory running at 1500MHz
Memory Bandwidth: 57.6GB-----------Memory Bandwidth: 48GB
Shader Model 4.0--------------------Shader Model 3.0
112 Stream Processors---------------16 pixel shader units

Will I get my money worth by upgrading? I am not fully up-to-date on the SM and stream processors. I can't figure out myself (with the limited knowledge I have) how this would be worth me paying £200

I have thought about the 8800 GTS at an extra £75 but the specs for that are unknown at present, apart from 128 Stream Processors.

Forget the old spec GTS/320/640, a 8800gt beats them in performance and will be a huge upgrade from your 1800, it will blow you away the performance the GT gives. Bare in mind that the new GTS will be out around the eleventh of this month, it gives a bit more performance than a GT and will cost around £200 depending on the retailer, cant go wrong with a GT though.

I would probably just get a gt the gts is faster in reviews but it also has 50mhz extra on the core over a gt. Imo give the gt a 50mhz overclock and there won't be a massive difference in the performance.

I agree with you guys when comparing the GT to the GTS but since nothing is really confirmed I think to myself how can nvidia release a revised GTS card with 16 more stream processors and a 50mhz extra clock speed for £50-£75 more than the GT. Its a bit baffling to think people would purchase the GTS with such a minor difference yet a huge price difference.

I have noticed people double there 3D mark 06 results when going from an x1800 xt so I suppose there is some big difference somewhere over the 2 cards. Just where I wonder :)

The average score in 06 for an 1800xt is a round 6000, some GT's are hitting well over 16000, granted they are heavily overclocked, but it all comes down to games performance in the end, the GT will pee from a great hight all over an 1800, with your current setup, a GT will be perfect.

My x1800xt got 5k in 06, i bought an 8800gt and get 11k now, the card is a sweet upgrade you wont regret it a single bit.

lol.

So there is no reason to spend/wait for a far more expensive 8800GTS?

What about the ATi versions? are they any good? having checked some of the specs on OcUK they seem to "look" better on paper.

Sorry to ask so much, I plan not to upgrade for another year or two after this.

GTS won't be £200, thats about how much the GT's are going for. :)

The GT will be a huge upgrade from an x1800, as said above its a lot faster than the old GTS, and i went from an x1800 to an old GTS, and that was more than double it, GT will about quadruple and some as its around GTX performance, but you could wait to see how much the new GTS will be, but they'll be pretty expensive due to being in shortage like the GT, so exoect to pay a high premium price for those to. :)

Today i replaced my 2 7800GTS#s in SLI with a single 8800GT stock speed and the difference in games like Crysis and Sega rally are immense. Well worth the change IMHO.

This is the best review Ive read on the ATI 3870:

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2007/11/30/rv670_amd_ati_radeon_hd_3870/1

Some will argue you should wait for the GTS, others will say go for the GT, as its available now and you know what it can do. Theres so little in it, its really a matter of preference. Whichever you choose isnt going to be a mistake.

Thanks for that mike, seems ATi/AMD still have some work to do before I jump over to them. There drivers are terrible at the moment and it looks like there not quite there yet with nvidia (although making good progress).

I think I am going to stick with nVidia that is for sure now. And I'm getting swayed towards the GT since it is smaller, and still is very powerful (and that bit-tech website gave it rave reviews).

Question it comes down to now is which 8800 GT do I go for. The ASUS one on this site has the best clock speeds of 700mhz / 2000mhz. Is this the best one to go for?

Thanks again Mike that link/site was very helpful.

EDIT: I am looking at the BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC2 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-053-BG&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008

One reason being the warrenty, but is there a better card that I should go for? ASUS has faster clock speeds but only a 2yr warrenty.

8800GT wise I would just get the cheapest one available and then clock it unless it's only a small difference in price.

The 3870 is a very good card though if you can't get hold of the GT due to the stock issues.

The upgrade will be huge.

Please take into consideration the new GTS coming on the 11th Dec.

If you could bag one of them then you will see bigger gains.

Having said that though the 8800 GT is the best bang for buck card I have ever used and I love it.

I will probably hold out a week or two, so far from this thread I have concluded that ATi is out of the question, it still needs some work in my mind. As for the GT there are a lot of pros over the GTS (revised GTS) such as the size of the card and the price which will drop by the end of december when supplys are not in such short supply. So while I wait on the GTS if I could decide on a GT at least I have norrowed my options down.

As for overlocking the GT it is out of the question. The CPU I am considering to overclock but the card I wont bother with, they get hot enough as it is and from other threads in this forum they appear to be getting VERY hot. I will most probably be purchasing an after-markert cooler for the GT/GTS as I did with the CPU (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro ).

Its eaither the BFG as above or the ASUS/EVGA that are slightly faster.

Just get the cheapest GT you can and clock it,

I have a 8800 GT running 721/2044 on the stock cooler and game without issue.Don't obsess about temps.

To not overclock a 8800 GT is a crime. They are such good clockers.
