Just a quick question: How much would you take off a salery to make London wages comparable with the south coast?

Nothing. The South (including the coast I think) is every bit as expensive to live in as London, just a lot more pleasant :)

Things like rent and commuting costs are the only big differences that spring to mind. But that tends to be the place in most parts of the UK. Things like food prices don't really vary that much.

Is there a rough and ready way to say that say £30k in London equates to £26K in Southampton or something like that?

Houses are a lot cheaper compared with London

I wouldn't say there was all that much in it. House price figures are often skewed in London because of the sheer number multi-million pound properties, but if you're looking at entry level properties, 1-bed or 2-bed flats it can be cheaper in London than outside. When I was living in Surrey I couldn't afford a 2-bed flat there so my choice was to either move further into London, Sutton, Croydon areas for example, or move further out - I chose further out because I wanted a higher standard of living.

Council tax is definitely higher in London though cos they gotta pay for the Mayor and the Olympics ;)

what do you class as the south coast?

the east is a lot more expensive than the west.

easist way to work it out, is probably look online at something like reed. and see what's the norm in diffrent areas.

Well, I'm just going off personal experiences.
I know someone who has recently bought a 3 bedroom house in Brighton for around £300K.
The same house would cost around £500K near here.

I'd assume working in Tesco in Southampton would pay the same as London, but working in an office would pay more in the capital.

I know what the job pays, but I want to know how much more expensive it'd be in London to live to work out how much the equivilent job in Southampton would have to pay to be equal.

Surely things dont alter much in price ie;

elec, gas, petrol, food etc would all be the same

surely its only nightclubs (maybe), public transport and rent/housing that changes?

I don't know what Southampton is like but rent in london will be around 12k a year for a small studio. Then you have a tube ticket on top. If you live outside the rents cheaper but I expect and I'm guessing so could be wrong. around 5k for travel.

erm according to who? a studio is about half of that, I've had 4 studios in north, northwest and south london all at £110 - £120 per week.....a one bed flat for example in north london, north west london is anything from £700 - £1000 pcm....then it depends on whether its furnished etc...

as for the outer skirts of london its slightly more expensive as everyone wants to escape the rat race...

My brother lived in several studios before buying a house he paid between 900-1200 per month rent.
