Ok, so I am cooking Christmas dinner for about 12 people, you know the traditional meal with all the trimmings. However, I have just been told that one of my guests is a communist, err, vegetarian.

What would you suggest to cook for her which is just a good as the meaty meal I cook for everyone else?

Burnsy

Give the veggie what she likes - vegetables! :D

Seriously, just give her a little extra veg, making up for her choice of no turkey.

well the veg and the roast is the same.

i would do some sort of mushroom and filo parcel instead of the meat. easy and tastes great, goes with gravy.

Mushroom, pine nuts and cheese, with breadcrumbs. Should make a good filling.

I'll have a look for a recipe tommorow.

blurrghh quorn..

Quorn is the vegetarian version of microwave food.

there's loads of dishes that aren't designed to have meat in them and taste great.

My veggie mate has a nutroast in place of a turkey, look into that.

Some veggies eat fish. I was surprised though, i know a guy so hardcore he won't have cod liver oil.
Personally i reckon if she eats fish, a salmon en croute would be good.

Buy a couple of those extra large portabello mushrooms and make a kind of beef wellington with them. You may need to work out whether you have sufficient room in th eoven first, though as all the other traditional stuff takes up a lot of oven space. If you don't have the room, then you may need to make something that either goes on the stove / hob or in a microwave.

Good luck and don't forget that you won't be able to roast the potatoes as you really should, ie. in goose fat, nor add bacon to the sprouts as some people do.

I'm a vegetarian and I usually have everything but the meat, can you ask what they would like? I'm doing dinner for 11 this year and am doing lots of food, 8kg turkey, stuffing, roast potatoes, I think I'll do the potato and celeraic mash again, brussel sprouts, carrots, brocolli, cauliflower, sweetcorn, parmesan encrusted parsnips, yorkshire puds and I think something else too which I can't remember. Might do smoked salmon starter or soup and rolls and will be having homemade christmas pudding with cream/ice cream and/or homemade mince pies. Can't wait :D

Wouldn't it be easier to ask her what sort of thing she likes? A lot of vegetarians can be fussy and won't necessarily like a random vegetarian meal.

Sounds good I'm doing one for friends either next weekend or the weekend after. I'll post a thread up tomorrow with recipes in..

I don't really like x-mas pudd. So I;'ll be doing a bannoffe pie and missisipy mud pie, instead.

I look forward to seeing them :)

I used to think I didn't like christmas pudding until I tried the delia smith recipe, I had compliments from everyone on it and it really was lovely, even I liked it hehe. I forgot that I'm also making chocolate truffles, irish whiskey truffles and a very rich chocolate torte which is divine :D

It's not taht i hate x-mas puds. I'd rather just have something else.

Although my sis made ice-cream covered in christmas pud covered in filo and baked. That was awesome.

Hehe :p

I like to taste a bit of everything :D

That sounds absolutely gorgeous, my mouth is watering!

Tell them to go and fight with the birds outside for nuts and you will roast them, Christmas Dinner is the best meal of the year, its just a helping of meat, alcohol and puddings
