Parents (only?) - Car Seats

Just checked mine and at 2 years and 1 month weighing 18 kgs puts a boy over the 99.6th centile, anything over that is out of the normal/average range.

We bought a car seat that does for our 10mth old (she's forward facing now), right up to when she's 10 or 11 - if it lasts that long, it will be the only car seat we will need.
It has bits that come off it and adapt as the baby turns to toddler and then a young child. Saves ya some dosh too :)

High backed booster is needed, a booster on it's own you might as well not bother as the safety is rubbish. The side protection is what's needed mainly.

Once they are older boosters are fine IMO :)

The young one that has been in my life recently (just turned 4) has a high-backed booster but he's getting a bit tall and a bit wide for it now. It'll just be a normal booster before long as his high-backed one will start to be uncomfortable for him.

Normally yes however we didnt have that sort of cash with 2 so we got the end of season stuff (major discounted but minted) plus a discount for twins so we arnt paying much more than one like yours

I would imagine you would need to change it way before then as safer car seats will be brought out.

Oh now im told by the wife that james (the bigger one) has always been in the top of the top and michael not far after

Think we only paid £35 for it mind. But pretty sure we'll need to buy another anyway - not likely to last 11 years.

Oh in that case yours is alto cheaper! I was expecting the £200 mark like some of hem are..

They're not fine though. In a crash a normal booster does not protect them at all. The range of high backed boosters on the market now means that nearly every child will fit them. High backed booster don't lift them higher off the normal seat than the simple boosters so the hight wouldn't be an issue. They are so wide that it wouldn't be a problem either. All tests have shown the high backed boosters are far safer especially in side impacts. A just 4 year old will have no problem in the high backed boosters. Safety is paramount.

Get a group 2 seat for your children that are now too big/heavy for a group 1.

Yeah we've seen some around this sort of price. Got it from Argos the missus informs me. The big brand seats would be nice, but you know what it's like bringing kids up - expensive! I don't know how we'd have coped if we had twins. :)

I thought the reason for a booster was to enable the seatbelt, sized for larger children and adults, to function correctly?

Looking at that video I can't see how the outcome for the child with a regular booster cushion is any worse than a 16 year old sitting in the seat without a booster at all.

Yes it is but as you can see in the link I posted it's worthless in a side impact without the high back.

Height difference? The tests have been done and are there, I'm just interested in the safest option for my children.

Right so i think i'll get so new ones, maybe the evolva 23 one however do you know any sites that have widths of the seats on?

Well the point of a booster is to remove the height difference. The side impact thing is a seperate issue - a booster is there in order that the a conventional seatbelt can be used safely and properly in the event of a forward impact. It is not there for side impact purposes and from the video you have posted is no more dangerous in a side impact than my example of a 16 year old in the same seat without the booster.

Plus the level of injury sustained and even whether there would be any injury at all in said side impact depends entirely on the car involved.

Booster seats are not and should not be considered a form of side impact protection. It is not their purpose.

There has to be a line between the safest option and practicality - clearly the safest option for your children is to not take them in the car at all, but such a notion is quite rightly deemed impractical.

Doesn't the britax site have that? If not then give them a call or try halfords/mothercare and they should be able to help :)

Side impact is the worst one and as you can see from the link a childs head would hit the door, a taller person would hit the window. Boosters aren't that high that they reduce a foot and more of height between a child and an adult. High backed boosters are there for side impacts too as they are the most dangerous for the brain.

Booster seats shouldn't even be on sale without the high back as they just aren't as safe and are a waste of money.
