Still not sure about Vista 64

Received my new machine's components today but I'm still unsure about busting open the seal on Vista 64. I've ran XP Pro for many years without ever having to install a manufacturer's driver (less graphics card and modem). The XP install is also absolutely rock-solid, fast and virtually flawless - I've never had a hint of trouble . Is Vista just as capable or am I about to enter the nightmare zone?

My DSL modem is old but still functional - there are no drivers for Vista on the manufacturer's site. Will it still work?

I need 4Gb RAM+ so should I just RMA it and get XP Pro 64 instead?

Cheers.

:)

Rock solid for me, never looked back. Apart from missing sizer. :(

Picks up all my drivers automatically, for both hardware and peripherals, never had to bother putting in a driver CD or going to the manufacturers website (apart from GFX).

You might drop a frame or two in games, but apart from in Crysis I've never really notice anyway.

I am going to take the dive and get Vista Pro OEM once my new Abit arrives.

Won't be changing that for a while, I am also approaching 4Gb.

Generally it is not too bad, though a number of things do get on nerves. Depending on which version you get, do not use the backup software. Its just ot very good - that's complete pc backup option, that is.

Do not let windows update your drivers for you itself. Everytime I have let windows update my drivers, it has caused no end of hassle. Specifically graphics drivers and network drivers of any kind.

Apart from that, can't think of too much to complain about.

Yes...its that thing you disable immediately after installing vista, or you will end up putting your head through your monitor!

Like what?

I set it to on but silent operation i.e doesnt pop up asking every time you do something, but this then causes the security centre to go

"OMFG you turned off UAC are you INSANE!!!! Arghhhhhhhhhhh"

thats kind of thing, i even tried disabling security centre in services, still pops up.

Not come across that yet.

Actually....doesnt UAC have something to do with Doom 3, i keep having these flashes of UAC written on doors :p

.... Union Aerospace Corporation :)

You gone?

If you havent gone yet, why not dual boot - i still have XP on my desktop (i need it for cubase), i always like a fallback os in case my main one fails, and Vista 64 for general use!

I will be Dual Booting when SP1 comes out and maybe a few more updates after that but am looking forward to seeing Vista.
