3850 or 3870

:osorry guys.thought these forums were to help each other.i,ve removed link.

They are to help each other.

But given that they are run by a shop, at cost to the owner, talking about places that can take potential business away from the shop is not exactly "playing fair" now is it?

Also, you two numpties that have quoted the link are just as bad as the poster who posted it in the first place.

Can anyone say, does the 3850 basically overclock to the same performance as a 3870 or close to it at least. They have different memory types so a direct comparison doesnt work looking at specs alone

Well my Sapphire 3850 overclocks to 769/2198 in the CCC (these are the max clocks for the CCC not the cars max) and will play crysis at these clocks (seemed like a good test considering how gpu intensive).

I don't know whether it was near 3870 performance but there was a noticable improvement in the performance in crysis.

Well i am goign to order one of these: PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro Extreme Silent 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail to replace my 8600GT 256Mb :D Should be fun!

Ordering a 512MB 3850 aswell tomorrow. :) Nice for gaming and for watching DVD's at a killer price. What more could a man ask for...? Erm maybe fries and bear in the package or smt! :p

Read my nick and then think again mate :D
Anyway good to pre-order now since they shall prolly ship to the people who have pre-ordered first.

How do we know which ones to pre order tho? If you want it asap you could order one that wont be in till january...

What am I missing? Why'd anyone go for a 512 MB 3850 given the price-difference (or rather, lack there of) to a 3870? The passive-cooled variants are fair game though.

Well got my refund through today, 3870's out of stock everywhere lol

Going to take advantage of the this week only offers so grabbing another 2gb OCZ, 500gb WD and a HIS 3850pro for now, can always sell it later on when the 3870's are more available if I don't like the card :)

Yeah looking to get either the 512mb 3850/70 for Christmas. However, I may have to buy it myself for the wife to wrap as a supply is so low/non-existant right now (and the few that come in stock and pushing the prices up as they are grabbed immediately grr *supply and demand d'oh*.)

Thinking about just getting a 256mb 3850 to tide me over (1280*1024) until the nvidia 9 series and ati's R700 come out next year, as this will be a cheapo option. (just worried about the limited overclocking potential of the 3850 at present).

Will still be an improvement over your current card mate, I saw a nice healthy increase going from X850XT to X1900XT and the 3850 is faster than the X1900XT :)

Yup, that is the dilemma though (And I appreciate it is an improvement over my current card). I've currently got a x850xt that just about does ok at 1280 (just) in cod4. I'll only be playing at that res, and in DX9 mode with xp (as I'll be waiting until I get a new motherboard before switching to Vista).

I still want to be able to play Crysis (don't care about AA that much) but I do like HDR. So would the 3850 (assume I'd overclock it to at least 720mhz if possible), with only 256mb do me so I can play it. I will want my wife to buy them both (card and Crysis + WIC + maybe Orange Box) for Christmas so I want her to be able to be able to buy a card in time, but not get ripped off, but at the same time, I don't want to be stuck with a card that can't manage Crysis with HDR @ 1280*1024 as it only has 256Mb.

Opinions please?

Matthew

If I have time on weekend I'll see if I can try it out for you, I game at 1280x1024 myself :)

How big are the 3870 cards compared to my Sapphire 1950Pro?

The 1950 is pretty much as big a card as i can put in my Shuttle!

Is there much or a performance difference between these 2 512mb cards?

Couldn't help it, some 3850 512mb came up at a very good price, and I waited all day to show my wife. To my surprise a 3870 with a overclock as standard and better cooling was also available for only a few pounds more... so my wife persuaded me to get that :)

Owner of 3870 512MB 800/2400 with zalman style cooler as of Christmas :) (oh, and she has just ordered Crysis and Orange Box for me, pretty excited :D)

Wierdly i'm wondering if I should have just stuck with the 512Mb 3850 and waited for a bios mod, or whatever to come out, to enable overclocking to at least 3870 levels. The other thing is i'm wondering about the high speed gddr4 as it doesn't have sinks on it ?
