Hi,

Im looking for some advice on memory for my new pc im building.

The spec will be as follows...

Asus P5E X38 chipset
Intel Q6600 95w GO

I am going to be overclocking this pc, my original aim is to get it to 3ghz but more would be great. The cpu will be watercooled so temps should be fine.
My first question is how well does 4 gig of ram overclock either in 4x1 gig or 2x2 gig config.

Second question is shoud i go for pc6400 or pc 8500 ram.

The ram i have been looking at is either the ballistix or tracer kit on thos week only or http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-096-OC

Cheers

Anthony

No need for PC8500, so PC6400 will do fine.

If you're not looking to be going over 3.6ghz then this will do the job. The extra £60 for the CAS4 OCZ you linked to isn't really worth it since you won't be needing to overclock the memory.

It won't go much past its advertised speed, but you won't need it to if you're aiming for a bit above 3ghz.

2x2gb kits are now cheap enough to consider them over a pair of 2x1gb.

My initial aim as i say is 3ghz but more would be great and something i will certainly try for, seems this chip easily hits 3.5ghz. I just wasnt sure if it was better to go 2x2 or 4x1 for the ram, and if there were any limitations to either config or even if its just better to stick with 2x1.

Have you overclocked your q6600 Cob?

Yeah it's at 3.5ghz (limited by load temps as it's an original B3 bought on release day back in April).

The G0's usually hit 3.5-3.6ghz with decent cooling. The cheaper OCZ will do that fine. Any more and the dearer stuff may be better.

I guess the it depends on how well my Go stepping quad overclocks as to how far i go. Would you stick with a more expensive 2x2 or go for 4x1 though cob if it was you?

Right now I would go for the 2x2gb kit.

Price is the only thing that 4x1gb has going for it now (unless you need insane clocking memory), and even the CAS5 PC6400 OCZ 2x2gb is dirt cheap.

Well i would definalty like to overclock the cpu as high as poss (stable of course) :)
