Which CF Card for a Canon EOS 400D

Get something like a Sandisk Extreme III. They can be picked up pretty cheap on the internet and are fine for the transfer speeds the 400D is capable of. Anything more than that is overkill really.

As for size, well that depends on what you're shooting and how often you dump your images. I started with a 1Gb card, lost it and got a 2Gb and then a 4Gb. That's plenty of space for me - over 400 shots on my 350D with the 4Gb card.

I've bought a Sandisk Extreme III for my 400D. Really nippy cards. I picked up a 2GB card for less than 17 quid. :)

is that raw or Jpg?

The Sandisk Extreme III as already recommended, either the 2GB or 4GB card, any smaller and you will run out of space quickly and any bigger they start getting more expensive than just buying two smaller cards. Two smaller cards also helps reduce the damage if one card goes bye bye. :)

I have a 2GB standard card and a 4GB Extreme III, I pretty much leave the Extreme III in all the time and use the 2GB card as a backup (never had to actually use it). :)

Indeed, Sandisk Extreme range is my choice of CF. You can happily use the Ultra II as well though. I prefer to pay the little extra for the Extreme III as they also designed to survive harsh conditions (in terms of temp, shock and even water damage).

Another user of the Sandisk extreme III cards, I have two 2GB cards, but raw only tends to give around 110 shots on my 400D, Certainly looking to get a few 4GB cards.

Yet another vote for the Sandisk III's. We have 2x4 and 2x2 GBs.

The IV's are better, but to be honest, there isn't much available hat can write to the card faster that te 3 can take.

The IVs will only be of use in UDMA compatible cameras such as the 1d Mark III and the 1Ds Mark III (Maybe the 40D but I'm not sure). If you don't have one of these just get the Extreme III. At one time it might have been worth getting Ultra IIs to save money but the difference on all but the biggest cards is almost insignificant now.
