Been to Thailand?

I wouldnt recommend staying in Bangkok for longer than 3-4 nights. Khao San is good to see and is a nice place to stay to see the nearby sights (Grand Palace etc.) and have a few drinks in the evening (find The Hippy Bar!) but my biggest bit of advice is to not trust anyone local. It's a sad thing to have to say but it really is that bad. Almost every time we went to get a taxi, we'd have to argue to get the meter put on (on one day we got out of two in a row because they wouldnt), people come up to you in the street and ask where you're going. When you tell them, they say it's closed for a national holiday and you should go to xxxx. We even had a sidegate to the Grand Palace closed on our face and told it was closed. We went round the corner to the main gate and walked in. It was absurd.

It's a great place to see, but it's quite hard work in the city.

the drug situation out there is very dodgy. you have to be very careful of thai people selling illegal things as they work with the police. the fines are massive and i heard of a case of 1 guy paying off the cops for £300.
The legal highs such as the diet pills can be bought from pharmacies and they're basically just speed. if you really need a pick me up just have a red bull. they're stupidly strong and concerntrated so much there like syrup.
The full moon party i went to, there must have been about 10,000 people there and it went on for about 3 days at the beach and then various afterparties further into the island.
I'd deffo recommend the half moon party in baan tai, theres less 'OI OI LAGER LAGER' people there and a lot cheaper. its usually 2 weeks befor the full moon

i'm looking forward to getting some good quality suits made to fit - a place my uncle frequents uses the same materials Armani use, just without the label, and gets 2 perfectly fitted suits for £100!

Has anyone flown on Etihad airways??

It should go without saying, but dont get dragged into any old shop by people off the street (warning: dont shake their hand when they offer it as they will hold on  ). Do some research into what are good places to get suits done before you go!

definately, heard lots of (almost) horror stories!!
been told about one place, been used a lot, so only that one for me

All the ones I've seen there look like something Roger Moore would wear in Octopussy, but then I've never really looked very hard.

Never been myself.

But one of my neighbours spends most of his life out there, and he seems to absolutely love it, so I'm sure you will enjoy it there :)

Well, i have all my injections toady
I think there's 4

I HATE injections

and i have to go over to St marys for them (biggest island), but we've got 40mph winds - boat ride is going to be fun!!

Do go and see the Real Bridge on the River Kwai.

It's nothing like the film version.

Visit the cemeteries and locally run museums.

I only had 1 becuase I didn't have time to to the courses for the others. turned out to be fine and i did soem very dodgey stuff

Courses?

They are just one off jabs. Hep A requires a booster within the following 12 months to give 10 year (I think) immunisation.

As far as I remember As I've not needed to have anything for a couple of years, they are all free and you only need a nurse appointment to get them done, so there is no reason why not. Japanese Encephilitus (sp?) is sometimes recommended but it's optional and it costs. Depends where you are going in the country though.

Never had any when I went last year. :o

Not something I'd recomend having seen the effects of hepatitis and diptheria, just becuase you didn't get them doesn't mean they are not there and personally I wouldn't risk it for the sake of some free injections!

Lived there for 2½ years, have a house there and go annually - never had any injections whatsoever.

Missed this thread as I was there when this was going on. To the poster asking about manual work there, you really don't want to try it. A manual labourer in Thailand "digging holes, fruit-picking" does well to get £1.50 for an entire day's work! Don't think for a second that any Westerner can live the way the Thai poor live.
