what to buy in america

I got my 8gb nano in the apple store for just around $210 the day after they came out (i was the first person to buy a green nano from the San Francisco apple store :D)

I've bought all my camera lenses and most of the electrical equipment I've bought over the last few years there - remember though as has been said already, you do have sales tax to add onto any prices quoted - and it won't be mentioned anywhere until you get to the till!

Cosmetics are very, very cheap compared to here, so if you have a g/f then it's worth asking are there any bits she wants for Christmas cos you'll save a bomb on them - especially designer stuff and places like urban decay and benefit. There's a great store called Sephora for all cosmeticy needs, male and female!

Walmart is great for cheapy stuff, but for clothes try Old Navy, Mervyns (if you're going to Cali) and of course Macy's, Bloomies, the usual suspects :)

Do take a smaller case inside your bigger case. If I was you I'd take as few clothes as possible - in New York a fortnight ago I took a spare case inside my big one and filled it within a few days - the savings are silly - I bought 3 pairs of jeans (designed by Sarah Jessica Parker) that came to less than $25 (for the 3!) with all the various discounts they threw at us - (it's a Saturday! Have 50% off!!). Clothes are just silly prices.

Cheers for that Kitten! I went to Sephora yesterday and grabbed her a load of Benefit and Philosophy stuff. My plummy british/scouse accent combo had the girls in the store in the palm of my hand and they threw in about and extra $100 of goodies free of charge! Combined with the UGG boots mrsyoustolemyname is on for a good christmas day :)

in 2 weeks im off to america. i plan to buy loads of clothes and trainers as they are way cheaper than here. I also plan to buy a DS as the person I am going to see gets 10% of walmart, so a DS is 60quid.
A guy here at uni (whos from america) said buy an ipod and ebay it as they are around half price. A ps3 is about half price but obviously I cannot get one as suitcase would be to heavy. I also may buy a copy of vista as its much much cheaper.

Anything else any of you know about thats way cheaper out there??

Bin the reciepts before you get back on the plane ;) or UK customs will hammer you, and you will end up having to pay as much as if youd bought them in the UK :(

i will be taking as empty a suitcase as possible.

Put your smaller suitcase inside the larger one.

It's odd, but with some airlines, you can only check-in one case to the US, but check-in two case in the US for the return flight.

If you're planning to buy a LOT, came back on the QM2. There is effectively no luggage limit. ;)

I had a mountain dew with my lunch yesterday. Didn't taste anywhere near as good as I remembered. Am at work over here now, lovely office with free soft drinks/coffee/tea and snacks. Going to disney/universal studios on weds and seeing the shuttle launch on thursday before I fly back on friday evening on the red-eye.

It's 80 degrees here, sat in the office in shorts chomping on some Oreos and glugging a starbucks.

Like someone has already said check any electronics equipment to see if they take 240v, rather than the 110 in the US. A PS3, and the Wii both are 110-120v only so need transformers, and good luck finding a transformer for the PS3! It needs over 300w.

Root beer is the way forward.

lucky charms are not what you remember, iv got a half eaten box from a few months ago in cupboard, they are bad craic. I was so excited when my mate brought htem back, i dint open them for weeks cos i wanted to hav them as a reward(im 21...) and was extremely buzzing when i opened them, was gutted when i finished me first bowl ;(

CocoPops > lucky charms

Aunt Gemimas Treacle or whatever its called, for waffles n pancakes, that kinda stuff is legendary. I love oreos, wish supermarkets sold them cos i dont like payin rip off prices for em in corner shops!

A shop in Milton Keynes shopping centre sold american foods and they had Mountain Dew there. It was a shop that sold sandwiches, cakes etc and had a whole section on the side for the american stuff and a small section up some stairs too.

New hampshire has no sales tax. Really annoys me when its says $10, then you get to the till and its $12.

The majority of my clothes were bought in america, ohh and dont bother with TJ Maxx ( US version of TK maxx ) just goto a store called Marshalls, its exactly the same but way cheaper. Timberland boots $60 bargain !!

american produce is rubbish, except for their pron, which is pretty good...well excellent

its crazy, most of the items mentioned are east asian in origin

wonder how much this stuff is to buy in China?

Sportswear is cheap indeed - I bought a Nike college Jacket at a Nike outlet store in the USA for about 1/2 the price a Nike Jacket would have cost me here. (that was 10 years ago though) Didn't have time to go outlet shopping this time round though :(

You can get rootbeer here too, though it doesn't quite taste the same here.
