Article:

Microsoft has announced that the long awaited European launch of Video Marketplace on Xbox Live will take place on 11th December.

Called "Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store" in line with Microsoft's new naming convention, the service will allow you to rent films in standard- and high-definition, although there's no mention of TV shows.

Films will cost 250 Microsoft Points (GBP 2.13 / EUR 2.91) in standard definition and 380 MS Points (GBP 3.23 / EUR 4.42) for high definition, and early examples include 300, The Matrix trilogy, the first two Harry Potter films and Clash of the Titans.

As of 11th December, the service will have been launched in six countries - the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France and Germany - to varying degrees. It is likely that the same US usage restrictions govern control of content downloaded here - i.e. that films are only usable until 24 hours after viewing or within 14 days of download.

In the UK, Xbox Live's Video Store currently features music videos from the likes of Ministry of Sound and Sony BMG.

The full list of launch films (albeit subject to change) is as follows:

300

So thats what my Elite was for, lol.

Prices seem fair.

Cool, for that price its cheaper than going to Blockbuster for a DVD, its like £4 for 2 nights to rent a nice scratched dvd.

I watched the E3 stuff in HD and it was very nice on my Sony D3000, a lot better than streamed HI Def stuff off my pc.

I'm guessing it's a case of being able to download the movie, Watch it. Delete it and re download the movie for free in the future?

hmmm, This makes me think maybe not

I doubt it. It's just a rental service by the sound of it. Download, watch, then if you want to watch it again in the future, you have to pay for it again

obv there will be people who copy it using some fancy system, but the pricing seems really fair, I will be using this:) providing downloads arn't to slow

I AM EXCITED TO TRY THIS OUT!!! (Not the copying bit, to my knowledge this is not doable as the DRM is allegedly very good, but I have no interest in this) As a rental system I think it is a good idea. Only caveat is if they did this prior to Blockbuster giving my Blu-rays via post to keep as long ass I like, I would have used it more.

The ocntent itslef is not great, but that will change and licensing etc is something MS don't have full control over so fair dues. Which I guess is why we won; be getting weekly TV shows like USA.

Can't see myself using this much, but I always like to try this new shizzle, just for the geeky/tecchie in me!!

Oooh very nice. Two issues:

- My net connection is 3Mbits (not MS's fault I suppose)
- I don't have an elite, so would one movie fit on disk?

I think the movies are circa the 3-4gb mark from memory. 3MB connection means you will realistically download at around 350k a second.

SO for a 3gb file looking at just under 3 hoursish...

Yep, will be looking to try this out too :)

Glad to have 20mb connection at times like these, surfs like crap (Thanks Virgin!) but seems to download ata constant 2.5mb/s :)

HD Demolition Man here i come! :D

Okay next issue, ISP caps. :p SORT IT OUT. hehe.

Nah, realistically. This doesn't effect me at all, I don't have a HD TV. So wouldn't be getting anything HD sized

but how big will the HD stuff be, 20GB or something uncompressed ??

It is compressed using VC1 (same codec that BD and HD-DVD use) or WMV-HD with DRM, I think. So it is 720p but at a lower bitrate. Hence the same film (300 for example would be 20GB ish and the downlaod of Video Market Place is sub 4gb).

Lot of this is going from memory of the USA store though.

pricing is excellent and as long as i dont have to wait too long i'd definately make use of thi s service.

excellent news :)

The pricing isn't as bad as I thought it might be. Quite competetive and I can't be the only to be thinking about Nicole in Eyes Wide Shut in HD....

Thought it must be close after the update today. Looks as if they are getting the marketplace section ready for it.
