Virgin 50mb to launch next year.

I get 2.45MB/s most times, though ironically it's on a go slow at the moment, but there were some hardware failures at my URB so they have it limping along on what is left until they can fix it. I've had a letter about it and everything. Very professional service and always has been for me at least.

I'd love 50Mb, but there is no way I will pay more than what I'm paying now especially with a pathetic 1.5Mb upload!

initially i could max out my 20mbit line anytime of the day, these days i'm looking at between 10-15mb most times and the full 20mb out of peak times.

i guess i'm still happy with VM as the reliability is still head and shoulders above what ADSL can ever hope to achieve but 50quid for 50mbit ...lol they can shove that unless they've giving 2mb+ for upload.

I used to only get 10-12Mb on my 20Mb until the recent fight against modem cloners, now i max out unless i cap.

keep up the fight against clones VM!!

i dont know why people complain about being slowed down by 50% between 4pm and midnight when youve downloaded over a certain amount. This is a totally fair policy, the fairest out there.I am a rampant downloader but i dont see why my online habbits should be allowed to totally clog the network and steal the bandwidth from the majority of ordinary Broadband users. Virgin have stated they will never traffic shape, and they will never cap your downloadable amount per month.

actually its slowed down to 25% if your on the 20mbps tariff & its not the fairest policy out there, BE have the fairest policy of them all. I'd be happy if it was 50% with a little more than a 3GB allowance

Once the 50mb comes in, I am sure the FUP will change for 20mb customers, Virgin always said that they monitor the situation, again I suppose that depends on the take up on 50mb and its FUP.

isn't 50mbit another gimmick really. virginmedia would roll out 50mbit to it's customers keeping the same cap limits as they are currently on 20mbit 4pm - 12pm but charging around about £50. the customer wouldn't benefit full 50mbit browsing speed as it depends on the server host. what would we get? nothing but higher charges

I would be very suprised if many would pay £50, I wouldn't. The biggest majority of broadband users would have no use for it at all.

there are lots of people who would have use for 50Mb, people like me who use the internet at all times of the day, not just prime time, which would get a very nice boost from having a 50Mb connection. Its not just a gimmick, its just like most other high speed connections in that it isnt for everyone.

the customer wouldn't benefit full 50mbit browsing speed as it depends on the server host. what would we get? nothing but higher charges

if all you intend to do is browse the internet then of course 50Mb connection would be stupid for you, but then again, its not aimed at you either. Theres much more to the internet then browsing websites. Saying there is nothing but higher charges is retarded, you get to download 2.5x faster then people on 20Mb, and considering the ammount of p2p users these days, as well as lots of other downloadable content, the 50Mb connection is much more then a gimmick, it is going to be a nice upgrade for a lot of people.

well you would be in minority then as most people have jobs and use internet to browse or download when they get back home between 4pm and 12pm

I'll stick with 20MB I think, 50MB should drive the 20MB price down the same way 10MB is now the price of what 4MB used to be since 20MB is out.

My little wireless-G network gets along perfectly on 20MB :p

well you would be in minority then as most people have jobs and use internet to browse or download when they get back home between 4pm and 12pm

yes most people have jobs, but just because you have a job doesnt mean you cant leave your pc on overnight while downloading, and turned off when you wake up, or left on 24/7

And dont forget, even during prime time you can make use of the connection.

Say you want to download 3GB which if i remember right is the cap of the 20Mb connection. even during these times a 50Mb user can still end up downloading that 3GB download long before the 20Mb user can, and if the 50mb has a bigger cap too before the reduced speeds kick in, he can even download bigger files b4 being hit by the cap, so he can continue to use the internet without having sevearly reduced speeds after downloading the 3GB file.

even if you ignore all other times other then primetime, the 50Mb connection is still better then 20Mb, just like there are many ppl who are on the 20Mb connection with jobs and such that choose that connection over the 4Mb package.

yeah sure leaving my pc overnight i heard about it although i don't practice it and won't do it even with the cap. i won't allow virgin media to tell me how to use my computer and especially when. as far as i'm concerned it's daylight robbery for cut down service. it's all about principle really i like to use or do anything while i'm awake and active on my desk and besides i couldn't stand the noise of my computer three feet away from my bed. i'd image i would up wake for work with some sort of a hangover

daylight robbery? virgin media have said the service they provide, if you dont like that service, dont use them! have you ever considered that maybe they dont want to anger their customers by having this cap during prime time for high usage people? maybe they have little other choice due to the ever increasing bandwidth usage, and without restricting high bandwidth users during prime time, all customers would have to suffer, not just the high bandwidth people.

anyway this thread isnt about the bandwidth limits during prime time its about the new 50Mb service, which imo is a great addition. For those who want more speed they can get it, for those who dont want more speed they arnt being forced to get it, so shouldnt care anyway.

oh yeah just for several hundred heavy users they decided add caps so that millions would get terrific service. please wake up if they wanted to do something about heavy downloader’s they could have kicked them of their broadband service and solved the problem but they decided to cap millions hence by screwing us all instead. i don't buy into this heavy downloader’s bull****. calculate heavy users by number of normal usage customers and odds are pretty high and before you ask me i know how many heavy users ntl used to have. i read a while back and it was about 850 only. that's not a lot to break down a bandwidth for most people on the network. you believe so many lies that virgin media says and your naive

yes the cap can effect millions (assuming virgin media has that many customers, i dont know), but, how many of them actully reach that cap and have their bandwidth reduced? the bandwidth restrictions wont kick in for the average user because the average home user wont download enough that will trigger the bandwidth reductions, as for the people who do download so much that they get their speed reduced, well you downloaded lots, wtf do you expect to happen? as you said, virgin media could have kicked every single person who is a heavy downloader (a heavy downloader being someone who downloads so much during prime time that the cap would effect them), but then instead of whining and crying about the cap being in place, you would whine and cry about being kicked from virgin medias service.

If its a choice between there being a bandwidth cap that stops ppl who download lots during primetime, but doesnt effect other people, OR having high bandwidth users continue using high bandwidth, even during primetime, thus effecting other people who may only use the internet to view websites, or youtube or whatever. I would choose the bandwidth cap.

In the end the choice always remains, if you dont like the bandwidth cap, do your downloading out of prime time, dont download so much that you get capped, or simply leave virgin media. the choice is yours.

much of what you said at the start is what virgin media announced to justify their caps but they are lies.

In the end the choice always remains, if you dont like the bandwidth cap, do your downloading out of prime time, dont download so much that you get capped, or simply leave virgin media. the choice is yours.

pretty much sums up virgin media there, totally crap in so many ways. if i wasn't already on ntlworld i would never sign up to virgin media so that they can dictate how to use my internet broadband connection

Thing is most of the time I dont get anywhere near speeds of 20mb which I pay for during or out of peak, I do not download illegal files or excessively, I maybe download 5gb a week of patches for Eve and a few videos, the rest of the time I hardly use the connection for downloading, thatys whats annoying for me personally, when I want to download something quick I can't :(
