Ok, my friend is an overseas student. He wants to sign a plan at @ £30 a month. So he had to provide his address and debit card details for credit check. He was decline due to the previous students who rented that house had bad credit report. So, the shop in my University told him to get a friend to sign up for him the first month and pay £30 (im the friend) and after the first month, the credit account will be transfered from my mine to his name so he will be paying through his account after first month. Is there such a thing like this? So if the account is not transfered to his name , do i have to pay throughout the 18months for his contract?

I just received the call from him 5 minutes ago and i wont be at university tomorrow and he wants my help on thursday,so you are the only person i can turn to now. Any help appreciated. :)

I used pay as you go and hence why i got no clue about this.

It is possible to do, i did the same with my girlfriend, where i paid the first month of a contract then she paid from then on from her account, although that was her doing me the favour, not me doing her the favour!

But might be best to give it 3 months instead of one month, but thats for you to decide, but yes, it can be done. it'll still be registered in your name & adress, but paid from his card, so with future upgrades etc.. he might have a problem there.

But from what ive heard, i need to give my debit card details too?
What if he does not pay up? Who will the company chase? Me or him

If you sign on the dotted line its your responsibility wether he is meant to be paying or not afaik.

Sometimes you know it's hard to reject even if you don't wish to help in a certain thing. He wants it this Thursday straight. And i just want to avoid hassle or trouble coming to me. That is why im asking for clearer picture. Thanks anyway :)

Just tell him to get a PAYG until he's sorted out with the credit agencies that the previous occupants have gone.

It will cause you loads of problems on your credit reference if he is slack with paying up for his monthly bill.

I wouldn't do it unless it was for family or gf. Its not worth it really. If he just wants this tariff so he can make overseas calls then tell him you want the phone! Still wouldn't do it though

+1.

Tell him to get a credit card to boost his credit rating.

You can transfer the account from one person to another with most providers, which will shift liability, however in doing so there will be a credit check performed, and if he or she didn't pass it now, then they probably won't pass it in a months time. This would leave you stuck with liability for the contract.

It's also worth noting that they don't credit check on addresses these days, but on individuals. If he's been declined it won't be due to his address...

Depends if he choose to opt-out Dolph, they still do check the address with selective providers (Orange included IIRC).

Like Dolph says though, ultimately once you sign on the dotted line, you are signing a contract for YOURSELF, regardless of who owns the handset and pays the bills.

It is possible, like your University have said, to do a contract transfer of ownership, but this will usually incur the same credit checking as a new connection on the new party involved, and if your friend has already failed, chances are he will fail again, and you are stuck with the contract, and liabilities involved.

Personally, unless he's a REALLY good friend, I would stay clear.

thanks for all the help. I have decided not to help him. Ive just known him for a month and i thought to myself 'why should i take the risk'

Once again, thank you so much.

Firstly, credit ratings are not on an address, they are only on a person - if he is an overseas student then it will be hard for him to get credit in the UK regardless of his UK address. Sounds like the guy in the shop is suggesting that he puts it in your name to make the sale.

Personally, I would not do this (unless he was a VERY good friend). Although it is possible to transfer ownership of a mobile phone contract, it is only possible if a) your friend doesn't change his mind and accepts ownership and b) is the mobile provider agrees to the transfer, which is very unlikely in this case (think about it - a person takes out a phone contract then 'transfers' it to their overseas student friend who then disapears back home leaving no one to pay for anything outstanding on the contract).

If after one month you find that the provider does not want to allow the contract ownership to change, or your friend changes his mind and decides he no longer wants it, then you are left paying the contract for the rest of its term.

EDIT: Just seen your post - if you have only known him for one month, then the answer is definately NO.
