The Golden Compass (aka Northern Lights)

To be fair you have harped on about how bad you think they are. Comes accross as a bit "goading" in a way.

ANyway I loved the books, though the third was a bit laborious in places, looking forward to seeing this film. Shame the religious outcries have forced a change, but unsurprising considering the scale of active christianity in the U.S. My best friend is also a Christian and she refuses to watch it because of the anti-religious themes in it. Oh well, her loss.

The same way that if you don't like a TV programme you don't watch it, you don't go on and on about how you dislike it. If you do enjoy it then obviously you're going to want to talk about it.

I thougrally enjoyed all 3 books myself.

Have to agree with Gilly about the books. The first is superb, an excellent example of original fantasy story telling. The 2nd is pretty decent, but the 3rd just descends into a mess.

That's sheer stupidity, everyone moans about things they dislike.

Saying it's "sheer stupidity" is "slightly" harsh, but yeah, people, especially on forums, will more often than not, moan about things they dislike rather than like to be honest. So that original statement is a bit misinformed. :)

Can't wait to see this tonight, hoping it will be as good as the books but know it won't be.

All the characters look right at least save for Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter, why oh why to film producers still cast her. The most flattering comment I've read about her lately likened her to an automata. She is not right for the part of the cool, intelligent, calculating, terrifying she-dog that Mrs Coulter is.

Also, someone said they replaced the Church with the Magisterium, in the books these were one and the same if I remember correctly.

Been nabbing posters of this from the cinema I work in and it does look amazing. So long as it captures the essence of the books it will work. Phillip Pullman has already given his approval of it so hopefully it will live up to the books.

Can't Wait!

Going to see it tonight so I've scrolled quickly all the way to the bottom so I can't see anybody else's posts and can't wait. It will be disappointing I know, but I want to see if the world's they've made into CGI what I imagined them to be.

Don't want to ever see the gay Iorek though... that will be dodgy.

OK I'll read one post.

I read that she was one of the best things in it? The fact that she's hot will help me out when she's on screen.

Kinda random - but the body double for the young girl in this film is the daughter of someone at work. :)

I loved the books so will be watching the film.

Not sure what to expect though whenever a book is made into a film I feel kinda dissapointed as bits are always missed out. Friend who have never read Harry Potter enjoy the films but I think some of them are terrible especially the last one.

Arggh, if you love the books DO NOT GO TO SEE THIS FILM!

It was crap to say the least, a massacred clip show not even held together with a semblance of sense. How they managed to make such a rubbish film from such a fantastic story is beyond me.

Where was the Aurora Borealis?

Basically they shot all the major scenes from the book, but wrong. They cut and pasted various events onto each character as they saw fit and put everything in out of sequence. Also, the name of the panserbjorne was not Ragnor but Iofur Raknison. In fact the list of things wrong with this film is so great that I'm only going to list what was right.

List of Things Done Correctly:

The ten seconds where Lyra looks up into the sky while riding Iorek and seeing all the witches.

The only reason I didn't walk out of this film five minutes into it was because I was with a group of people and had to get a lift home. Thankfully I can get in free so didn't waste any money on a ticket for this perversion of Phillip Pullman's great work.

I sincerely hope they don't get the funding to make the sequels.

Loved the books, hated the film.

It just meanders on, with no sense of pacing. The characters are underdeveloped and in several cases at odds with the books. The biggest flaw is that the films narrative lacks direction, the major themes and events have been removed leaving an experience that is only superficially similar to the books.

With all the potential the books had to make a great film, its sad that we are gifted this turkey instead.

I saw it last night and it was absolutely crap. Everything was rushed through, and it just seemed to be a case of "well that happened in the book, lets get that in there" and it just raced through everything. No magic, no charm, nothing.

It's like when Lyra meets Iorek, that scene last about 2 minutes and he's off to get his armour and the contract is done. Sorry, what? That was terrible.

Then there's the formulating of the plan for Iorek to beat the king of the bears - in the film she literally walks about 20 metres and has a plan all set.

It's so rushed and literally felt like a checklist film against the book.

I'm very fond of the books and have booked to see the movie at the weekend with the wife and both sets of parents. :)

Even if its not that great I'm sure we'll all enjoy seeing someone elses interpretation of the books and even if its rubbish the cinema serves Absinthe :D

To be fair that was a pretty pathetic excuse for a review - I really suspect that there are going to be a few people who will pipe up with a negative review simply because they have a biased opinion on the religeous bent. There are quite a few viewers reviews that have rated it at around 8/10 on IMDB.com

here is another that is reasonably favourable.

In what way exactly was it a pathetic review? Now that I've seen the film it suits it perfectly.

The computer animation was excellent, and the daemons were cool, flitting about from form to form, but I don't think it really added a great deal to the film and afterwards we were all wondering where exactly the $180 million went to? Maybe that's the future of CGI, though.

In all honesty I thought it slaughtered the book, but I think it would be a shame if they didn't finish the trilogy off.

Oh and as for the religous slant - did you really even notice it in the film?

All we got was the magisterium wants to control everybody's thoughts, and the link to the rather forthright notions in the book was pretty tenuous - even yourself you admit that they'd massively dumbed it down given the current climate.

They'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they reproduced that directly. It's a bit of a weak excuse for slating a review that doesn't agree with your own opinions.
