Games that never became popular

I bought KaM upon release for some reason, played it a bit, enjoyed it, failed miserably once I got past the first two levels, and gave up.

Lost CD now, where can it be bought?

I have no idea tbh, KaM was my 2nd game I ever bought so hence I love it.
I've later bought the peasant rebellion ( few extra stuff & new campaign but same game) for 10€ in a toy shop ( Toys 'r Us ) and iirc that was just after the euro has become the currency, so that's ages ago.
I still have my original KaM: TSK cd but it's scratched beyond belief, got KaM: TPR twice as I once bought it illegally in poland a polish copied version, and later in The Netherlands a (legal) dutch version.

The game still appears to have fansites but most are Dutch or German, I think this is yet another game that wasn't released widely enough.

that actually looked good, didnt have 150 players online or something silly like that?

Dont think it was that many - I'm sure it was less than 100 but still impressive. I had the original - was quite good but vehicle physics were really basic. Not played it for a while but apparently its riddled with cheats nowadays. Never tried the expansions.

'Explosive 150 player games!
Play in games of up to 150 players online via NovaWorld, or host up to 64 player games online or over a LAN.'

I guess it was either not active enough or to laggy for that though.

Flyswatter server was 150 player for about 2 years or so,then they dropped it to 100 players. depending on the map, its usually full too.

Joint ops.
Better than BF2 in every way bar graphics and nobody bought it.

I played it to death and Beta'd the first expansion; even won a mug for consistantly killing the main dev.

Also made a couple of maps for it, my first was called Sniper Cemetary.

My mate also runs a coop server still called cheatfreezone or something - good for a laugh.

It is odd how little quality seems to have in common with success. As said, hype seems to make/break an aweful lot of games. Couple more that spring to mind:

Planescape Torment: Possibly one of the finest games I've ever played - chilling, and beautifully narrated story.

System Shock: The original was so far ahead of its time that the world missed it completely.

Giants: Citizen Kabuto: Worth it just for the early dialogue - priceless.

Can anyone remember the ooooold 3rd person (isometric?) adventure/beat'em'up when you are a cyborg and start unconscious in a cell and have to escape - beating one of the other cellmates to death with his own arm? - driving me nuts and can't track it down

Bioforge

Don't think Riddick did as well as it should have. Guess people were put off by the idea of a film tie-in (they are usually awful) but its a bloody fantastic game with stunning graphics.

i used to play the origianl version black hawk down, and then moved on the joint ops was awsome game, should really install it and play it again, it was a lot mroe fun than bf imo. miss my old squad days :D

Richard Burns Rally is in my opinion the most under rated game ever released on the PC.
It is without doubt the Best driver on the PC even to this day Years after release. Compare its popularity to say CMR & i am stunned that the Masses prefer Arcade trash to the Supreme driving experience that RBR gives you.

avp, best multiplayer dm i have ever played and very very good single player campaign.
Didnt really take off due to the hardware needed to play it well being way ahead of its time and being released similar time as half life

No One Lives Forever - brilliant and it was actually funny - laugh out loud funny.

NOLF2 was great too, but apparently nobody else bought it.

Clive Barker's Undying. Didnt sell well and got mediocre reviews. Thought it was very good.

ShadowMan by Acclaim. Got slated at reviews but imo was a very misunderstood game. Very difficult and a harrowing theme, the scariest game (if there is one) I have played, the sound effects and some of the art was very disturbing. A hidden classic.

brilliant game, had it on the N64 and it took me nearly a month to get into it due to how hard it was especially at the early stages. Ended up completing it and collecting all the souls to get the 2nd violator weapon (h)

They were the two I would have said. The first one is brilliant and the second one isn't bad either.

Also I don't know anyone in real life who has played the first two Broken Sword games which rank in my top 5 games of all time.

Which thinking about it would be:

FF7
Broken sword 1+2
Deus Ex
Half Life
No One Lives Forever or maybe Mafia

Planescape Torment was fantastic, and missed by many people.

Also in my opinion Battlezone was an amazing game, blending RTS and FPS. It also had a cracking plot involving the cold war and aliens on the moon.
