New car in the new year, gove over here has gone ape and is changing VRT rates to a c02 based system (vrt is the tax an irish person pays to register a uk car in ireland, anti european etc sucks balls!)

anyway in the current system cars over 2.0 litres are at 30% of the current open market selling price, this will rise to 36% for anything remotely interesting next june so im gonna change in feb/march time.

requirements as follows.

Must be no more than 7 years old
Must be faster than my e39 530i sport
Must have some level of practicality - 2 seats ok but need to be able to carry a normal amount of luggage from time to time
Must be able to get a well looked after lowish mileage example for no more than £16k sterling

So far im thinking Porsche boxster S, BMW e46 M3, Nissan 350z

other suggestions welcome

It doesn't fit through a tax loophole either, they class it as a 2.6 or something :(

Niall - the new VRT system ONLY applies to NEW cars as far as I know.

I know road tax will be going up by 11% for me though - €1230 :(

Mazda RX8?

Might fit through a tax loop hole, since it's technicaly a 1.3.

I can't remember exactly what the figures are but the RX8 will feel slower than his 530i.

£16k for a UK spec 350Z won't get you a great example, you'll have to get a Jap import to get a decent one. I was considering one of these a while ago and most decent examples cost over £18k.

Not ment to be flippant in any sense!

E39 M5?

Nice 2000 model £16k sterling should bag you a nice low-ish mileage example (£14 k to buy perhaps, £2k just in case?)

RX8 is classed as a 2.6 in the UK so probably the same over there.

It would be a little faster in a straight line against the 530i, and miles faster on a track (if you care). It wont actually feel faster though.

Against a 330i the RX8 is ever so slightly slower in a straight line.

another vote for the 350z, excellent car. but it's probably best you come a and drive a few, see what you liike the look of?

This money i would be in a CL500, a low mileage example is perfectly possible for the price, would be around MY2000/2001.

Basically an S-class in a nicer 2 door body, and as such have all the luxuries and comfort associated with that. The 5.0 is a good engine, and quite pokey.
